I've finally started my 96' Tacoma Project (Full project post will be up later).

I started with changing up the rear end since it was set for pulling a trailer.
I'm wondering if I should weld my rear or try and find a locker for cheap.
The truck will most liking not see the road again, and I think I'm running 4:10's (not the originally diff) right know which I'd like to change out later anyways.
The big thing is I don't want to invest a lot of money into the truck at the moment, that's why...

If it'll never see the road again and you're looking to lock it on the cheap then I say go ahead and weld it - but just remember - make sure you do a thorough job, welded diffs if not done right can be a disaster waiting to happen - if it breaks you now have broken material in the diff that usually ends up taking out the ring and pinion. I'm looking forward to checking out the thread!

Yup - Go tor it. Just fill the spider gear teeth full of weld, don't try to weld the gears to the carrier - they will break eventually that way.

I know my sami isn't a HP monster, but I have the rear welded as Adrian describes and its been fine for 10 years. Snapped an axle shaft with it too. Co-drivers fault.

X3 best way to do it, this way when stuff does break, you can still take it apart. Oh wait, I suggest instead of the spider gears, fill in the teeth of the axle gears. Bah I guess it really doesn't matter which...
I had my Dana 35 with 35"s set up like this and aside from broken axle shafts, I never had a problem.
