Wheeling rig, expedition rig, or just a daily driver?

Changes through the years can be found here:

http://wjjeeps.com/newoptions.htm

I'm partial to the 2003 for the side air bags and the LATCH seat anchors in the back.

2004 (last year) for the 7 slot grille that don't follow the lines of the front end (ugh).

There were supposed to have been some AirCon issues in the 99-01s. Something about a badly soldered circuit board behind the dash (controller) or expanding/exploding capacitors or something. These issues can be fixed (DIY) or later WJs don't have the problems.

There's three engines: 4.0, 4.7, 4.7HO.

4.7 has more power than the 4.0 and gets the same mileage according to EPA (fueleconomy.gov). That's what I'd get. The HO takes premium fuel IIRC.

4.7 seems to have a good reputation. It is a modern engine design with SOHC and designed to be efficient (for a V8). It'd take it over the 5.2/318 in the ZJ any day.

2002 up will have the Akebono front calipers instead of the Teves-Continental ones. The Contis are prone to warping. http://wjjeeps.com/brakes.htm
Again, something that can be fixed if you ever encounter the problem.

IMO the case to get is Select-Trac (NV242). It's all mechanical and no electronics or viscous couples to go bad. Only seems available with Laredo and Limited trim levels with 4.0 and 4.7. You can tell whether it has SelectTrac or not by looking a tthe bezel on the shifter. If there is no 2WD mode then it is not Select-Trac.

I think that's the biggest stuff... Generally seem to be good value and I haven't heard a lot of negative about them. It's the last of the low tech, non-Wrangler Jeeps. Chryco went retarded and started putting electronics in the transfer case (among other places) of all the station wagon Jeeps after this.

Thanks for the info Chris, I'm looking at a DD. I'm glad your mentioned the Select-trac, I'll certainly look for this.

Someone mentioned something about bad transmissions??

I'm not certain about this.

I know that the modern ChryCo transmissions got a bad reputation initially. There was a quality of parts issue and a lot of "old hands" where still using DexronIII instead of ATF+4. This caused a lot of premature failures (supposedly).

ChryCo designed the new transmissions around ATF+4 so that is what you have to use.

I have also heard that a rebuild of these transmissions will make them pretty much bulletproof if you get stuck with a bad example (applies to early ZJs? - forget the context I heard it).

Also, something else, the early V8 transmission (45RFE) is upgradable from a 4 speed to a 5 speed via a software flash upgrade. This makes it match the 545RFE. I'd expect by this time all WJs would have had this done. The 545RFE was introduced in 2001.

IIRC this can not be done to the 42RE used with the 4.0 engine (not enough planetary gears or other inside to achieve the 5th gear?).

The 545RFE also has another cool feature where a different 2nd gear ratio is available for smoother shifting. I'm guessing it interfaces to the TPS and OBD-II load value somehow.

Important stuff here regarding fluids:

Oh, another couple of things...

If you get one with the aluminum Dana 44 do not jack it by the pumpkin. The housing doesn't like it and can lead to bearing issues.

For a daily driver run the D44AL till it breaks. You'll probably have gotten bored with it and sold it or are looking for wheeling axles by the time it gets worn out (Mopar JK axles are the correct width).

The wheel bolt pattern is 5 on 5". This is the new pattern used by all the modern Jeeps (WK,JK,XK, etc.).

I know thjat Dan's WJ, its a 99 model with a 4.0L, isnt what he expected. The tranny is finished in it and he has just over 100,000 km. He did some light towing, nothing major though. It won't shit out of 2nd gear now. He's had problems since he bought.

He also had the problems with that capacitor thing for the blower motor, but as Chris mentioned, you can fix it.
