Hello, Does anybody have any info on changing gears in a 99 wj? I swapped the rear from 3.55 to 3.73, i'd like to swap the front now. Anybody know what axles i can take the gears from or where i might find gears or a front axle assembley?
thanks,
dan

It should use the same "thick" gears as a TJ IIRC. The axle assembly is ~3" wider than a TJ and the LCA brackets are in a different location (or was that UCA?). It's not a big deal to move the LCA brackets.

For the PITA factor, maybe try A&O or similar for a whole axle out of a WJ. Were WJs ever offered with 3.73 gears? Spidey-sense is saying no but...

A quick search on jeepforum yields yes to 3.73... pre 95 /w the tow package, post 95 /w the I6.

LOL

There may be 3.73s but I don't recall seeing them when I was doing my research for vehicle purchase.

from what i am seeing it came on some models with v8, and with 4.0 with the towing package. I've already installed a factory hitch, with reese wiring as opposed to dealer, and i have a tranny cooler. Seeing as I drive where its hilly and curvy and i tow, I figured 3.73 would be good and it'd finish off the "tow package". I smoked a curb that they poured the year chills for cheo was at dave's house, for the last year or two the rear end got worse n worse. The rear i bought from a wrecker(garage louis guay). I called them to see if they have the front but they dont. A&O site says they have none in stock but i am sure they'd find one quick if i called. I'd go for a whole diff if i can. or used gears, or new gears, or maybe just put my 3.55 back in the rear. I am driving with the front shaft off for now(awd). If they're the same as TJ gears they should be pretty common, im sure someone has a set laying around somewhere after going to 4:10 or 4:56.

Seems to be a lot of complete axles in the area on www.car-parts.com
and looking under there under the vari-lock axle??? (Is that a limited slip? Even some people on the web refer to it as a locker  ???) and there is somebody in Sudbury with just the gears for $200

I like the a front axle with suspension for 400 in oshawa, good deal but a lil far. the guy said shipping would be about 175-200$, still cheaper than buying one around here.
Outside of getting that, who sells gears? I am trying to just find a store online so i can price some out and compare part numbers with the tj.
