What is your personal opinion on what gears i should be running for weekend trail runs and the odd run around town. NOT a daily driver, no winters,etc.....

2.5L / 5spd / NP231, 35"s right now but might move to 39"'s if the opportunity came up. There might come a time when i swap to say a 300 for some lower gears but who knows.

I have been shooting for 4.88's, but have been coming across some really good deals on complete axles in the 5.13 range.. I'll be locking both Fr and Rear...

If you're looking at 39"'s down the road, go with the 5.13 and be done with it. With the 4cyl, you'll need all the gearing help you can get, and being a stick, you can always start in different gears as the situation calls for (if 1st/low is too low). Just be ready to run a fair bit of RPMs with the 35's when you're on your way to the trailhead.

axles will be replaced. This is the conundrum at hand. Looking at many sets for sale used so as to possibly save some coin on the build from scratch (Gearing/brackets/brakes, etc....) and just want to make sure that the set i go with has the gears (Based on personal opinions) i need. Hard on my end to determine as i have always only run stock gears in all my past 4X4's.

Too bad Trevor wasn't online to discuss how he liked his 4 banger with 35's & 4.88's. He'd be about the best one to ask as he has driven on that set up.

If you are getting d60's go with the 5.13's, 'cause you won't be on 35's for long. If going with d44's, I would get whichever set of gears had the best deal.

5.13's

I was running 4.88 on my Yj with 33's and wish i had more gearing. If your planing on going even bigger than 35's i would definitly go with 5.13. I'm swapping out my front 30 with a 44 and plan on running 5.38, with my 36's.
