I may be in the market in the near future for an air compressor. I don't need anything big (aka not portable) but I want something that a sander or impact driver could work on so obviously no $99 models. I was thinking up to $400. Anyone have any good recommendations under that price?

Try to hear one running before you buy it. The belt driven ones are usually much quieter. Some of the direct drive ones are stupid noisy, some not too bad. Check the CFM specs, they are more important than the tank size.
If you don't plan on moving it around, get the biggest you can afford/have the room for.
