Driving along last night eveything seemed fine..out of nowhere the engine dies, check engine light comes on.. Tried repeatedly and it would not start, cranked no problem, could smell the gas so it was getting fuel...towed it home and this morning I replaced plugs, wires dist, rotor, ignition coil as it looked like it wasn;t getting a spark....she fired uo fine and ran for probably thirty minutes idle and various rpm's no load.....but it did eventually stop, it doesn't sputter just dies...

Same symptoms my Runner had 2 years ago, and that *was* the fuel pump. But you said you could smell fuel, so you'd think the fuel pump was working....

hmmmmmm..yes it did seem to be working as I could smell the fuel when cranking it trying to get it running, that is why I first thought spark and changed out all of that...but now a short seems more pausible...how many grounds and where are they on a 98 TJ, 4CYL.?

Fuse? what fuse would it relate to and would it run and not run if it was a fuse?

Do you have an FSM. If not, PM me your email addy. I can send you one in PDF (Although the one i have is for a 1997, they are exactly the same). At least then you could look at the various wiring and see where there are main splices, grounds, etc.....

Yeah, i was just throwing stuff out there. If it was a fuse it would stop working and not work again one would think.

Could possiblely be the ignition module, or dist. pick up. Sometimes when these things heat up to a certain temp they fail, then when they cool down again they work fine. Will it start again after it cools down or sits for a bit?

Does the 2.5 have the same crank position sensor as the 4.0? If so the test is if it runs when cold but shuts down when hot pour water (well I was using water bottles as I was on the road) so at home put the hose to the CPS and if it starts up then you need a CPS.

Yes it will start after 10 minutes or so, probably just long enough to cool down.

Don't think it matters or is connected at all but I just had the rear diff rebuilt and insatled, the current problem wasn;t there before the diff replacement.

Put the new CPS in let her idle for quite awhile, brought it up to operating temp. toured around the parking lot for awhile (tired of paying towing fees, don't want to g o far) and then took it for a quick spin around my neighborhood and all seems good...I'll have to wait and see what happens on my drive to work tomorrow morning.....<fingers crossed>
