Anyone up for a run this weekend. I am cool with anything. Pager is off my hip so I am in for sure. Might try Carp on my own, but would be into anything.

Generally the club did not organize or support trail runs before at least second week of May -the trails are still wet.

What Mitko said and tsk tsk on running a trail on your own.

Really? Done many on the motorcycle.

I am on record asking about trespassing in another thread, so I hardly think I am being reckless here.

Motorcycle is a little different. Harder to get stranded on a motorcycle when you can usually push it around. In general it's considered bad form to go offroading by yourself. God forbid something happens (stuck or even worse injured) if you have someone with you they can always get help.

It was definitely unusual for someone to set up a run so early. Was it even an OVO sanctioned event?
Dunno. Too short notice for this weekend for me. I should have my LEDs in my fenders by hopefully the meeting. Haven't driven it in 3 weeks what with the Tummy Tuck and the new front fenders.
Next weekend may be better.

I do get that....just thinking of exploring. On motorcycle yes, but I ride a Ural....:) 2wd will get you further, but I do know my limits.

Not sure what is "sanctioned" yet I guess. You were going to participate in the Green Lake run, and that was before May??? Confused...yes, I am.

WTF? Soooo, you're not stranded if you can push it home? I'm pretty sure either way you're still walking...... This definitely can't be what you mean.

Let me clarify, if your vehicle breaks and gets stuck and you are by yourself and it is > 3 wheels (in normal mode), it aint moving and you don't want to leave it as you might come back and find it torched. My point about going out alone is it is a bad idea in general because if something happens to you or your vehicle, you are probably screwed. Most of the places that we wheel don't have spotty cell coverage at best. If you have someone with you then they can at least try to help recover you or go get help. With a motorcycle at least you could potentially push it to a road (may take you a reeally long time) and flag someone down. Now if you had an accident and broke your leg, what can you do. Pretty much the reason I am saying this is if some new person to the sport comes along and reads this thread they realize why not to go without someone else.

Regarding May, OVO doesn't sanction offroading before May as it is usually too wet, this ends up ripping up the trails and making them more difficult thus reducing the accessibility. Carp used to be a much easier trail that a stock TJ would have no issue. Because it has been used and abused so much the minimum now is 31's and a lot of that has been done by people getting in there too early in the season. From what I gathered Adrian went and checked it out to see how dry Green Lake was and it was ok.
OVO sanctioned runs are scheduled at the beginning of the season to ensure that there are at least a couple of events where OVO members will be leading a trail run so that new people will be able to get out and try a trail safely. It doesn't stop anyone from setting up their own run just that those don't fall under OVO's insurance or responsibility. Also realize Mitko answered your question of why there were no runs scheduled right now which is the club doesn't post runs before May. It isn't a rule of "make a run before May and you get shunned". It's that generally we wait until May, Adrian got impatient. If you want to set up a run fill your boots just that most of us avoid doing it to minimize further damage to the trails until they harden up a bit.

Yah, Green lake was a bit of an exception, there is no mud/water on that trail, High rocky stuff mostly. Trails like Lavant/Carp/Quinn/Crag are all to wet this time of year.

Carp being such a high profile trail (Being close to a lot of housing development) is even worse.

With the new insurance we are looking at this year, a sanctioned run will also require email notification to the insurance provider with an outline of when, where and a ballpark number on how many for it to be covered. Note that non-members can organize trail runs, but without a club member as the lead, it would not necessarily be considered a club event and therefore insured. Same goes for runs towards membership - non-club runs may not count.

This has been a bit of a grey area in the past, but I think we'll need to get it a little more defined in the upcoming months.

Good points. we may want to have a sticky up regarding trail runs and what is or is not sanctioned

Planning on it, but I still need to figure out a few pieces. In a way it sucks to be this formalized though.

I'm very curious about this club insurance and what it covers, is OVO an LLC? Does our vehicle liability insurance not cover us when "off-road". Do all the club members with buggy/truggies have some type of liability insurance?
I remember when getting liability insurance for my dirt bike they required me to have a motorcycle license, even though it was an off road bike (which then led to me "street legalizing" my XR400R)

Green lake has next to no mud, so it's a friendly trail this time of year. A few water crossings though.

And posting here as well.

is OVO an LLC?

I believe OVO is an non-profit org, not sure how that relates to an LLC.

Does our vehicle liability insurance not cover us when "off-road".

That will come down to the specific insurance company. You roll your truck while wheelin', and injure someone bird watching at the bottom of the hill. This isn't a municipal roadway, so I would not be surprised in the slightest if your insurance co told you that you were SOL.

Do all the club members with buggy/truggies have some type of liability insurance?

The club does require that each rig be insured, although I don't believe we've ever checked each person. Many with buggies are getting them plated as an ATV/buggy, and getting insurance that way.
