My truck will not start! It is a 1.6 sidekick engine with a 1991 sammy fuel injection system. It cranks good but no start until I let the key go then it kicks and wants to start but not quite. Lots of fuel. I pulled the coil wire to the cap and lots of spark. But from the cap to the plug very week spark. Is it the distributor pick-up, the ignightor, the coil, the ignition switch.??? I have heard that this is a common failure, I do not want to just start changing parts. Someone must know which...

check the cap or rotor for build up, and ignition timing

Cap and rotor are good I replaced them last summer and maybe put 500km on them same with the wires and spark plugs. I did the valve seals last summer also, so I had to set the timing. The truck was running when I parked it in the silo for the winter, I drove it in. I went out in the middle of the winter and tried to start it to play around, and it just would not start. So I left it till the weather got warmer but it still will not start.

Is it auto? Maybe Park switch
Did you check Ignition inside cab maybe a loose wire or bad cable.
If it cranks but not much have you tried jump starting it?

Its a 5 speed standard, took the ignition switch out and every on the outside is connected as it should be, It is not a stock switch it is a universal starter switch that I picked up at a auto parts store. It would be a cheap thing to replace to see if that is the problem. I know that this was a problem on the old carburated motors of the seventies when a car was hard to start it was usually the balist resistor. I don't think that fuel injection systems and computer controled cars of today have this part. It cranks very well. I have a good battery and can't seam to kill it.

well

1.Seems to be spark plug wires
2.No fuel or fuel pump not coming on
3. timing

Maybe frozen gas line?
Yes even in mild weather it could still be frozen.
I have the air breather off of it and when I release the key it spits out the throttle body so it is getting lots of fuel. I originally thought that was the problem so I was dumping fuel into the throttle body but it made no difference it still only fired when I released the key.

Maybe the timing belt jumped a tooth .I may play with the timing tonight, but it was running fine when I parked it. Except for the blue smoke out the tail pipe. I will be changing the engine in the next few weeks. But I would like to have it running before I rip out the old engine. I would hate to install the new engine and try to start it and it wont start. That would really suck.

Does anyone have a Ignigtor for a 1991 sammy it is the little control box that is on the underside of the coil. The sammy has 4 wires going to it. They are not the same as the sidekick ones. My truck is still not running. I have changed the fuel pump and filter the pressure was a little low in the old one. Removed and cleaned the gas tank. Still did not run. changed the distrbutor, changed the coil, checked the compression (good) checked the timing, took the ECM off and took it to be repaired he said it was in good working order nothing was blown, he cleaned it up and re soldered it. On last saturday the truck actually ran twice but when i shut it off I was not able to start it again and now I have no spark So the only thing left to change is the ignigtor, I am begining to dislike fuel injection!!!! Pete and Dennis do not have one,What about the boys at the Zooklounge??

I'll double check with Scott tonight, but I don't think there any 91 Sammy stuff there. Do yourself a favor, on the thermostat housing there should be a common ground there, make sure it it grounded properly.

I forgot to mention that I removed every ground wire on the truck and grinded them the bare metal. including the one one with the 2 wires on the thermostat housing. There are a lot of grounds with the wiring harness of a fuel injection system. I just bought a 1990 sidekick engine c/w wire harness computer/ sensors everything I need to make it work. I am told that these systems are much more reliable than the 1991 sammy system, Is this correct?? But I am running out of time for Spring Fling to get everything installed. So I am hoping to get what I have running for now. Blue smoke and all .I will just stay at the back of the line! PS a new ignigher for a sammy lists @$600.00 I can get one for $350.00 alot of money to pay if it is not the problem!!!

91 Sammy FI is a good system, the 91 kick setup goes bad. We just just did a 16V swap in a 91 Samurai. I'll see if Scott still has the guys number, the engine is blown but everything else is intact.
