Carrying Jerry Cans: What are the rules?

Are there any rules for carrying jerry cans on the outside of a vehicle?

Other than the obvious stuff like being well connected to the vehicle, colour of the can, etc. are there other rules like maximum amount? Two 5 gal cans versus 12 say just to be ridiculous?

What about fuel cans on trailers? Propane cylinders?

Just wondering if their are rules about this. I've never heard of anything but it seems like there is something wrong if there are no nanny rules in place already. :)

What're the rules for colours? (Red for Gas, Yellow for diesel, Blue for water...) Is there an actual regulation for this?

It is Fire regulated because the Fire Department needs to know how to handle a fire when they get there. Mixed signals takes lives. The previous owner of the flattie had yellow jerry cans for a gas motor because he liked the color yellow. I got stopped because of them, and varous other infractions. Is it in the HWTA? not sure.

What about the OD green ones from military surplus?

Spidey sence tells me that there is something about not having them in the passenger compartement but that would exclude everything but pickups from carrying them.

Containers must be approved for the product and be labled as such.

Once you pass a certain volume you requre dangerous goods certification and placards.

I know it is illegal to carry/store propane on it's side, something to do with the liquid getting in the valve.
