Chasing Unicorns: Jeep CJ7 outer stub axles

I went out to my pile of axles figuring I could pull a stub axle out of a CJ7 front axle to fix the PITA hybrid axle on the front of my XJ. I broke the WARN 38248 axle on the XJ's front end.

I pulled the shaft and brought it into the Man Lab in order to separate the U-joint when I noticed that it is the small 260X style U-joint. Shazbot! I need the 297X style CJ7 axle.

Supposedly I can use the stub axle off a Scout II... I'll pull one out of my pile to see if it'll work so I'm not...

Get a hold of Mike Lorient - he might still have my old CJ D30 lying around. If not, Scott (Baja) picked up a CJ recently that he was parting out.

Ack! So I pulled the broken shaft out of the XJ and the splined end at the locking hub is a larger diameter than the CJ7 or Scout II shaft. Talk about a waste of time today!

This requires more research since it is not a straight to OEM replacement shaft obviously. Talk about finding out the hard way.

Chris I have an 86 CJ7 that I am tearing down. If you figure out what you need and they will work for you let me know.

Just as a side note it has the rear dana 44 rear as well.

Thanks for the offer. I got lazy and ordered the replacement Warn part. We'll see if it will work. I don't have much faith in the Warn part numbers validity and such since Warn sold off their axle line.
