Won't shift into 4th revs high before shifting into second and quickly drops into 3rd at times and then bogs at first in 3rd

Not sure what trans is in it. Its a 98 Cherokee sport 4wd. Its working now but wouldn't go into 4th this morning. Fluid level is a little high but still a clear red colour. It kicked a 7053 code though

the transmission is AW4. The code is for a shift solenoid malfunction - common problem with those transmissions. If you are handy you can replace the solenoid, its not very hard.

Should see approx 13 ohms on all of the solenoids. Don't forget to check all the wiring and make sure your grounds are good.

BTW, the official way to check the fluid level is with the engine running and up to temp, Jeep on level ground, and transmission in P. If you don't know how old it is, change it. About 3.5-4L lives in the transmission itself, there's another 4L in the torque converter. Drain and fill it a few times. No need to drop the pan. Dex III/Merc only, don't use that ATF+4 junk
