Chertsey was a nice place to do trails.........

Another good use of funds that no one in Canada utilizes is signage. Basically like the Adopt a Road Program. Signs posted along main trails and access roads stating that these trails are maintained and cleaned by such and such a club. It was my plan to use the BFG money for a program like this, but then I got fed up.

I don't remember anything of the sort ever being discussed. I know we bought the directional signs etc that we still use for SF weekend etc but this is news to me. Would have been a great idea. Why is it too late for the trails we have left? I realize that there are assholes out there that will use them for target practice but hard to avoid that.

Survey done

Unfortunately, it's not the clubs doing shit like Danny posted, it's regular Joe Schmoe that does it and gets us a bad name. Hard to keep them out and let us in........Easy to put posts 5' apart to allow the ATV's

I also filled the survey, and fully agree that we are the minority and seems like we do not exist, so like has been said in the past, maybe the answer is to change our approach. Stop the trying to appease everyone angle and try the in your face angle (like the NRA). Make it known what we are doing what the impact of it really is, and that we do give a sh*t and are there to keep it going and well, we do pick up garbage, we do do cleanups, and will continue to do so, but at the same time, our impact is far less significant, and the damage we cause is minimal.

If there is one thing I have learned in life, is if you are working and trying one approach and it fails, try a different line.

Keep the change.

This is not good. I wheeled in Chertsey many years ago, and I was planning on heading there this season. Survey filled.

I'd like to warn you all that Chertsey (Forest Ouareau) is OFF LIMITS for the time being. There are actions being taken to try and restore access to the trails, but in the meantime please respect the request.

But I can say some good has come out of this.... I just can't tell you what yet...wink wink!

ORA has been very busy in the Parc for years, cleaning up all kinds of garbage. By all accounts they have been very good to the Parc and portray off-roaders well.

I was at the clean-ups the last 2 years in Chertsey and spent a lot of time picking up after disgusting messy campers, grow-ops, people dumping loads of garbage. The last 2 years have been "joint" clean-ups with the ATV clubs but last year hardly a single ATV showed up. ORA is visible. They are doing the best they can. But no bureaucrat or township official ever got fired for "playing it safe" by banning a few big bad "monster trucks" (in the words of Larose forester) ... we just don't have the numbers to be a viable special interest group.

I helped out with Marlborough and Larose too. For me these weren't very exciting destinations anyway, too wet, too muddy, too flat, so I don't really miss them. But Chertsey has a sweet trail system so it's really a tragedy.

John - a side-by-side is not the answer - they are not technically legal in Ontario as off-road vehicles, nor is my 2-up ATV. An off-road vehicle is that in which you straddle the seat and that is designed to carry only one passenger. Apparently in some parts of the province the OPP has been issuing tickets to side-by-side drivers and 2-up drivers even with only 1 person on-board.

I don't have an answer - I'm torn between the "be visible, do clean-ups, be friendly, tread lightly" approach and the "keep a low profile, stay out of trouble, don't call attention to yourself, go underground" approach. The first doesn't seem to work, the second likely won't either.

I have been in touch with a couple of folks who I believe are leading the effort to restore access. I have offered some thoughts/advice. The OF4WD will be there to help our Quebec friends if needed.

Sounds to me as though you have a good case.

Peter: Is there any action that can be done? More public meeting coming up? Need for support beyond online petitions? I would strongly suggest NL tries very hard to work with ORA on this.

I have been in contact and emailed Patrick and ORA folks again this morning. I gave my suggested plan and offer of further help.
