Ever since I went to 33's I have been waiting for the Dana 35 axle shafts to break. Supposedly 33's is the magic line where the Turdy-five lives up to its name. I have heard people breaking them at smaller sizes but that is usually a situation of buddy's dog's old owner type of anecdote.

So I picked up a 8.8 and a HP Dana 30 on Sunday (yes I know little tyke axles) and was planning on picking up some chromoly axle shafts and Arb Lockers.
I originally looked at the Superior Super 30 but it...

Have you looked at Yukon?

That's what I'm running up front. Great product and lifetime warranty. They are supposed to be done of the best out there.

I'm very happy with them

When you do order fronts make sure you get full circle u joint clips with them. Should come part of the kit. If not get them save you allot of headaches later on

This is going to bite me in the ass, but I've been running a locked D35 with 35's for 3 years and haven't broke a stock shaft yet.

My experience with stock parts in an open dana30 and running 34" and then 35" tall tires has left me with many broken ears at the Ujoint end of the axle shafts, usually on the long shaft for whatever reason. When it wasn't the shaft broken it was the teeth sheared off the axle gears, luckily those gear teeth didn't get munched through the R&P either time this happened. Fixing axle gears on the ground in the bush on a Dana30 is a pain in the arse! The whole carrier has to be removed, which means of course both shafts and the tie rod, and a big ass pry bar.
"If" I were to build a dana30 I would definitely go as strong an axle as I could and a selectable locker to avoid the destructive back and forth one wheel spin.
The thing I liked about the Dana 30 was the great ground clearance with a set of 35" tires.

I originally looked at the Superior Super 30 but it is not easy to find so I started entertaining getting them separate. This also gave me the opportunity to look at other manufacturers than Superior. As pretty much everyone knows I am not the most hard core offroader by any stretch but I spend the money up front and not have issues in the long run.
Here is where I am looking for opinions
27 vs 30 spline.
If I go with 27 spline I can use stock axle shafts as a spare. If I go with 30 spline that reduces the risk of axle shaft breakage however it essentially makes the R&P the fuse instead. I think replacing 10 u-joints is better than 1 Ring and Pinion. But if I never get it to the point of breaking I would rather not have to worry about it.

Manufacturers:
Superior - great reputation but the priciest out there. I was looking at the Evos but I could get the Discovery ones much cheaper. Since we don't live in the US we don't have that whole buy American issue :)
G2, Alloy USA - used to be good but have been bought out by 4wparts and Omix-ada respectively. Supposedly not as good as they were before but that doesn't mean they aren't adequate for me.
Nitro - dunno a lot about them
Ten Factory - right now this is the one I am most interested other than Superior. Gather that when Alloy USA was bought the guys who left went and started Ten Factory.

For the rear it is easy, Super 88. It's the front I am waffling on.

Well to start with Superior is gone and the balance of stock was bought out by Yukon Gear.

I have sold Yukon Gear axles and gears for around 9 years now and I've stuck with them thru the hard times too.
It's no secret that they had hard time with imported axles that were "problematic" to say the least.
But from all failure comes great things and they are now back on top with a QC facility in Washington that over sees EVERYTHING sold.
At one point I was buying Superior to keep my customers happy but the service sucked bad.
Randy's (Yukon Gear) is by far the best vendor for problem solving and customer service.
I sell all makes of axles and gears but I know when it's crunch time who's gonna back me up.

We presently have our shop TJ's 44's loaded with Yukon Gear Zip Lockers, Yukon Gears and axles and I'm doing my best to see if they'll break!!!lol

As a bonus all YG or USA standards parts bought from PJF4x4 are returned to our store, not to Randy's. So the hassles of shipping to the US are eliminated.
We also try our best to get as close to the US price as possible.
Let us know if there is anything we can help you out even if it's not YG!!

great responses all around. I think it is between ten factory and Yukon Gear.
Danny I pm'd you last night can you see about ten factory prices as well?

the one thing I havent decided on is 27 vs 30 spline. IOW moving the fuse to the Ring and Pinion and should this be a concern? I am pretty happy at 33s and at most would go to 35s. just looking for peace of mind and looking at this as a project to do
Opinions?

I bought from pjf and was happy.

Also I really agree with going 27spline.
You won't break those so save your coin imo plus You can still use your stocks for spares.
The weak point on those shafts are the ears.
You know how I wheel, my others are ultimately d30 and i couldn't keep the stock ones from streching, not a budge out of the Yukon shafts.

Also I think a Detroit in the rear or even just a lunchbox is plenty for you, save your coin and just air lock the front.

my concern is using an auto locker in the winter.rather not learn how to drive with it .

I'm running spicer joints cause super joints don't like road use apparently,

Chris i head that driving in the winter with a rear locker is very predictable.
I only thought front auto lockers were the scarey one's.

its the opposite. in the front it is an issue if you are in 4wd. the rear you always have power. granted you can relearn to drive with an auto locker but it is when the shit hits the fan that it can really screw you.
also re ujoints and the Dana 30 I would figure it would be better to keep the fuse out of the diff and have the u joint break. although I read most breakage there is due to deflection in the yoke ears under stress

Driving in winter with a rear locker is really dependent on wheel base for one. In my FJ40 it was fawking HELL , in my Toy Mini-truck it was fine.
