I will be going to look at a vehicle im interested in purchasing which is a 92 Ford Explorer 4x4 and i was just wondering if anyone from the club would be able to come with me probably monday night to take a look at it. Im pretty good mechanically but would rather someone more seasoned come with me to look at it.

Its a cheapy truck, white with alittle rust but its 62 000 MILES and supposed to be in running order and be able to pass safety.

Once i pick this up im hoping to pick up some 31...

I currently drive a 97 Ranger which belonged to my mother before she died. My step father currently doesn't have a vehicle other then his work van so when i move from Brockville(where i am living now with him since her death) to Ottawa with my girlfriend I will be leaving the vehicle with him.

1. Reason to leave the vehicle with him would be that he has no other method of transportation.
2. I really dont want to risk anything happening to it. Its all that i have left to remember her by.

The reason i looked at the Ford Explorer is well its in my price range and if its on the up and up then its a bad ass deal. I just happened to find it. I dont really care what the vehicle is, just as long as it isnt huge(girlfriend friendly) and its under 1500$ and requires little to no work to get it to pass safety.

I also looked at a 96 Toyota Taco. But the rear 1/4 panel was rusted to hell and the front 1/4 panel needed replacing. The frame was fine but the front and rear bumpers were both messed up.

As far as safety goes thats not too big a deal either. I can make it pass safety(friend of mine will pass anything i put in front of him as long as he doesnt see something blaitent).

I appreciate any help/advice given.

Edit: to clarify. I didnt decide on an explorer and go find it, I happened upon it in a search for anything 4x4 for under 1500$

Well as i said, the safety thing really isn't an issue. I have a friend who will safety anything pretty much as long as he knows its me. The reason i asked if someone could come with me is maybe you will see something i wont that may effect reliability. and i wouldnt mind someone clear headed there who wont mind saying "look, walk away man."

I can see myself getting there and being all retarded happy to find something in this good of condition and then not notice a couple HUGE details.

Farm Boy

Bought the Farm
If it doesn't work out, there is a black 2 door Cherokee for sale on Hwy 43 just west of Winchester (right near Wegant Farm Supplies) that says $1200 on the windshield.

There's also my Grand Cherokee already lifted with 31's on it.
I'm asking 1750 but am willing to negotiate, I'd be happy with 1500

Technically it needs a parking break for safety but safety is never the issue.
Emissions is. And as is mine wont pass. I don't know what it needs.

My opinion

Walk away man, not saying those are all junk but all while I was a parts guy at Ford every one that came into our shop was,,,problems with hubs (400 bucks each)and at that time and problems with antifreeze/head gaskets and other expensive issues, the prices may have dropped by now on the parts to fix but I wouldn't touch an Explorer with anyones hard earned money,,,,buyer beware!!!

Well I'd dont discount it based on the type of vehicle being prone to certain problems because all vehicles have them.

Rangers with the 2.3Lima like mine do easily 400 000km but are prone to problems with clutches and the 7.5inch rear end is garbage.

If anyone has any alternatives id be happy to.

JeepJen: I think i already talked to you about yours. Emissions is my main thing im worried about. If it cant pass emissions then I dunno what to do with it. I'd love to take it but i need to atleast know what it would take to pass emissions.

Unfortunately I have no idea what it needs.
Would be willing to accept less in light of emissions needs.
Make me an offer :D

Here in Ontario a vehicle must pass an emission for title transfer. There is no exemtption given on a transfer title. So it doesn't pass an e test you can't tranfer the ownership until it does. could be costly ! Sorry Jen just had to make sure all is aware of that fact.

Same as saying you can't transfer ownership if it doesn't pass safety.
That's what the 10 day temp plate is for

Common knowledge I'm pretty sure

no!!!! some vehicles for whatever reason will not pass an emissions test, if you presently own the vehicle after $450 bucks worth of parts thrown at it and it still won't pass you can get an exemption, but if you're trying to pass an e test for a change of title you can throw limitless dollars at it and still fail, you will not be able to transfer the ownership if this happens.

and you can transfer ownership without a safety, unplated title, no safety needed.

The emissions testing requirements for ownership
transfer and registration renewal have not changed.
You can buy or sell a vehicle without an emissions
pass, but it needs a pass to be plated for the road
under new ownership.

Please don't throw mis-information around without citing your sources.

You could potentially lose a sale for me with your false data

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying! It needs to pass an emissions to be plated under new ownership.... and many have been screwed buying used vehicles without a passing ownership only to find it won't pass even after throwing buckets of money at it.

No, what you said was:
and you can transfer ownership without a safety, unplated title, no safety needed.
but not without a passed emissions test

Now you are saying whatI said originally.
How about you just mind your own business

Okay, so I messed my words up. Point is , a person is taking a chance buying a vehicle without a passing emissions test and should be careful when buying one with a known fail on an emissions test.
