So i'm getting ready to do a budget gear/axle swap on my 87 YJ heep...quick question to those of you in the know...

> Are the D30/35 Axle housings/tubes the same size thickness from a 4cyl to a 6 cyl jeep? I know the 4 bangers run stock 4.10's, which i am trying to incorperate in my rig...but did AMC/Jeep skimp on the axle tubes or housing on the 4 cyl's?? I was considering a complete front and rear axle swap but am now thinking i might be missing something....these D30/35's are weak enuff...

No differences as far a I know either, just my 0.02 but I wouldn't waste a single penny on a Dana 35. There are much better options with minimal mods if you're going through a swap anyway, the ford 8.8 or 9 inch , Dana 44 and even the Chrysler 8.25 come to mind and are a vast upgrade.

If you are going the D35 route, try to find a pre-buillt set for cheap - it'll probably be less than a gear swap on your own as a lot of folks are getting out of the D30/D35's. Try poking around Jeepkings for a deal.

If you are looking at > 33" tires, though, I'd take Mucovich's advice and look for something a little stronger for the rear, and maybe stick to a high pinion front if you can.

Thx for the input guys...i'm still runnin' 33's...will be staying with those for a while. Thx for the advise on the swap options. I am running open diff's and the low HP 4.2L , which should keep breakage to a minimum - i hope. As stated, i have the axle swap planned but it's on the back burner for now. Just bought a house so cash is SUPER tight. Think i've decided on a full axle swap from a 4 banger YJ...I'm not tooled up for a carrier swap/set up...and farming it out for a set up is not an option. Sounds like a saturday kinda job...I would just need to get my rear spring saddles re-positioned and i'm back in the game...runnin' low-er and slow-er : )

Re: the 'High pinion front'...I read this last night on TheRangerStation.com ... "The Dana 30 that was put in the Cherokee (XJ) and Wrangler (YJ) is a high pinion, reverse cut unit and are the stoutest Dana 30's built."
I didn't know that...nice!
