D300 or Atlas 2

like the title says what do you think!!!

D300 with flip kit, 4.0 low range or atlas 2 4.3 low range, both will be expensive, twin stick, and strong as hell

I have no problems shifting my 300, though it may depend on the gears in it and I've never used an Atlas so can't compare.

I'm not up to date on current pricing but with a cable shifter flip kit the 300 should be cheaper than an Atlas. Also check the length difference, a 300 is shorter than an Atlas(1), but maybe not the 2? It can help with driveline angle if you don't plan on pushing the rear axle back.

DIY flip is cheap, nearly free, but involves a bit of fab work. A few hundred for the kit if you purchase one. Any donor will be well used, abused, and you should rebuild it. IIRC the rebuild kit for Dwayne's was around $300. Plus cost of the used t-case, $150 and twin stick at 200. Say $1200 or so installed. If you don't re-gear it, which I would. So closer to $1700-1800 with new gears.

If you are looking at a crawl box in front of the 300 ad about $500 for the kit. Bringing your total near $2000....which is damn close to the Atlas 2 speed.

Atlas 2 speed is $2200, brand new, bullet proof and comes in your choice of reduction.
Atlas 4 speed is $2800, all the gear you'd want, etc....
For double the money you get 10x the t-case.

My choice will be the Alas 4 speed for my next rig.

Pardon my ignorance here but....

Am guessing you'd need an adapter to mate to an existing Tranny correct (I.E. in my case, the AX5).

Anyone have an idea of the length variances from say an ATLAS/adapter to an NP231 w/SYE? I have thought about one of these as well, but never thought about the variances on length and how that plays out on the already short rear driveshaft. I am really not interested in stretching the rear because i don't want to expend the coin on the new gas tank nor do i want to move it up behind the rear seat.....

Just curious.

Atlas 2sp shortail: 11.8"
atlas 2sp longtail: 13.8"
atlas 4 shortail: 15"
atlas 4 longtail: 17"

The stock np231 with a SS sye (i.e. jb conversions) is shorter than the atlas II.

Rough numbers from memory ... np231 /w stock outputshaft ~20". np231 /w sye ~17". np231 w/ ss sye ~14"

So there's lots of wiggle room then... Interesting.

Thanks for the info Brad.

so far I am leaning towards the atls 2 speed 4.3 cause I havent done a rebuild so would have to pay labour on the d300. So it would be the same cost for an atlas.

The short D300 does not have provisions for the spedo gear which is a prob seeing this is not a trail only rig.

The d300 is a cast case, the atlas is aluminum and the clincher is lifetime waranty on the gears so if I want to use it in a new jeep I can!!!

As for the np231 it is an ok but is like a d30 is a tird herd about just as much bad as good (although I am buying a hpd30 till i find a 44 lol)

anyone have any info on lovell transfer cases? I heard the shifters are air actuated and can do so at any RPM. knowing that I thought it'd be cool to hook up an Eaton Fuller double split shift knob instead of 3 or 4 gearshifts.

Thanks Dirk...

I looked into the 4 speed and it seams the smartest route to go, should definatly be the last T case i buy!!!
