Dana 30 ball joint

Is it possible to change the upper ball joint on a Dana 30 front axle (98 XJ if that matters) w/o removing the whole knuckle?

I don't think so. There is not enough clearance with the axle shaft in. The ball joint is press fit and I can't see a way to get any type of c clamp style press in with the shaft in. And if you are going as far to take the shaft out you might aswell save the hassle and disassemble the while knuckle. my two cents

Nope, you have to remove the knuckle. But you do not need to remove the bearing from the axle, just remove the caliper/disk and the 3 13mm bolts (12 point) holding the bearing to the knuckle and pull the bearing with the shaft attached!!! go to http://stu-offroad.com/axle/balljoint/balljoint-1.htm great info..
