Anyone know off hand how much fluid an HP D44 from '76 or thereabouts will hold?

FYI, it has an ARB and a SOLID cover if that plays much of a part, however i can go on the standard amount without these changes as a start.

Thanks all.

Cool thnxs. It looks as though 3qts is around the norm.

How do you know when you have enough?

The fill hole on the 44 cover is pretty high and the 8.8 doesn't even have one! I will have to sensor opening directly on the top.

Usually you want your fluid level to be even or just higher than your axle tubes so your outer bearings are lubed, but I guess you're gonna need x-ray vision to see inside yours if you have no fill hole on your cover or in the housing.......hmmm maybe this info is not so helpful......

I always fill to the hole whether it be in the cover or the housing.

The couple times I've tilted the pinion up I drilled and tapped a new fill hole in the cover to have it fill the axle tubes a little. I based this on the original fill hole location and pinion angle.
