If I'm plating a buggy what class does it fall under? The mto site leaves things way too vague for this kinda stuff.... Thanks

You actually need to go down to one of the Service Ontario offices and get the requirements from them, the website is sorely lacking that info. They will give you a sheet with the requirements for registering homebuilt vehicles. I just recently went through this for my heep; you will require an affidavit stating where you got all of the major components for the build - motor, tranny, case, diffs, chassis, body, the ownerships / VINs of the vehicles those components came from, and receipts for any custom parts.

I didn't have the receipts for any of my drivetrain, so I ball-parked the cost and dates acquired for those bits, and that didn't seem to affect anything. The lady behind the counter actually had to call their MTO hotline anyways to find out how to proceed, and as the frame came from my '00 TJ, they just re-used the VIN I already had, changed the vehicle class from passenger to offroad and issued me an ATV plate. $35, 20 mins, and I was out the door.

Of course, this was my individual situation, but if you might already have the ownership to the donor used, or if someone is selling a title to something your buggy already resembles, using that ownership / VIN and having it changed to offroad may be the easier route as it won't require another safety, and cause less headaches at the Service Ontario office. FWIW, I moved back to NB in June, and transferring my Ontario offroad plated junk to a NB offroad plate was as easy as transferring my pickup.

If you still want to register it straight out with a new VIN, the affidavit is just basically a letter stating where you got the parts, the timeline it was built in, costs, VIN numbers, etc. The only thing is the affidavit needs to be taken by someone who is recognized by the province to take it. I was lucky as one of the girls working the counter at my local MTO office was able to take it, otherwise I would have had to probably go to City Hall to get it taken.

I hope this helps :)
