So I've made some changes to the gallery, namely disabling functions we don't seem to be using. It appears to have yielded a noticeable speed increase. If anyone notices anything broken (other than some thumbnails, still working through that), send me a PM or post here.

I have put a poll here, because further speed increases can be had at the expense of functionality currently in use. I'm asking if anyone cares about the EXIF info (camera and photo settings) at the bottom of photos...

Wow, what a difference, I always thought it was just our host that was slow.

I voted to remove both. We're not a photography site so we don't need EXIF data, it just wastes screen space. If someone really wants to see this data they can download the pics and get the info from the files.

I also voted against the cart cause I never used it, but if others do then I'm fine with it.

Ditto. If I want the Exif data I'll download the pic and extract it myself. I have used the Cart in the past, but didn't realize these features were impacting performance...

I voted keep the EXIF without realizing you meant the generated web page stuff and not stripping it from the data files themselves.

Consider my vote changed to remove both. :)

Thanks Richard. If anyone has problems with thumbnails or resizes, let me know. Also, if you could check the gallery before you delete the folder on the FTP site, because I may need to download the files to fix them (I had to do that with one of the galleries anyway).

I use the download applet and point to the files on my HDD. Does it work better from FTP?

I don't think it works any better, but that's how I was taught to use it. No big deal if that's how you do it, especially since what I would do is resize them smaller and you already did that.

I put up 50 images last night (I did not resize first, as far as I am concerned, that's what the gallery software is for!) ... uploaded to ftp, created album, and let 'er rip. All images were resized, all thumbnails created. First time in a long time I've tried to do more than 20 images in one go. Has anything changed recently?

No, other than you may have been lucky in your timing. It seems the gallery is more co-operative when there's less server load. Or maybe 1&1 put some money into more servers :)
