Good source for scrap metal?

I want to build a pair of elevated stands for the axles to work on. I'd rather not have to pay the prices for new from Loucon, etc.... Is there anywhere that has scrap metal lying around that one can pick through and take / buy for cheap?

Honestly, because my wood is all stored in the shed with a whole pile of stuff piled on top of it for winter storage and i don't want to start pulling it all apart :) Plus i find wood stands can get wobbly after a while, whereas metal ones do not

I guess i could go get more wood...

Good point though thanks :)

Ummmm axle stands? That is what mine all sit on? Shaped like axles, strong, shaped like axles. If you are thinking they are too low I would have you consider that if you build "tall" stands to put axles on they better be strong as gravity wins all the time. I would like to suggest axle stands as they are shaped like axles. Buy a low stool and sit down, relax and work.

Axle stands on a wooden table? lol Wooden stands are only as strong as you make them... spend some bucks on pressure treated stuff and bolts and that thing'll be indestructible.
