Hey Everyone!

Okay so I was in Montreal on Friday and my TJ decied to crap out on me.

My rear diff is pretty much fried. Im picking up a complete rear end from Daves Auto for $1100.

Heres the thing. Im sopose to be leaving on the 14th - Next Friday for a trip.
So Im woundering if anyone here knows of a good place I good take my Jeep to get it fixed or even if somebody here could...

The exact problem is the diff cage needs to be replaced, and I need axel seals...
Its a dana35 with 3.07gears.
So I guess Id just go with replacing those in stead of the entire rear end. Save some time and money

Disconnect the driveshafts at the differentials and zip tie the shafts to the chassis.

Make sure the rear shaft is well tied down and not able to slide rearward so that it doesn't pull out of the transfer case.

They said the diff cage is fried, and I need axel seals..
Im in Kanata and in a huge rush.

The dealer ship (Champlain Dodge) in montreal said it was going to cost me $2900.
all they had on the estimate sheet was
Parts/Labour = $2900

Capital Dodge couldnt beleave thats what they have me for an estimate and said 2900 was WAAAAY to much and they were trying to rip me off.

Get this, they wanted to charge me a $50 release fee for me to get my jeep back.. and when I got it home my front bumper is bent, and my foglight were the bumper is bent doesnt work....

The jeep is getting checked out again tomorrow so Ill let you guys know but as of right now looks like Im going to be fighting with this dealer ship in Montreal for all of it.

Careful, capital dodge ripped us off. We scheduled a oil change and tire rotation and they decided to change the diff fluids and transfer case fluid. And NOT rotate the tires! They refused to acknowledge the mistake and it coast us $400. We will never goback there.

Not only that, changed the diff and TC fluids at 24,000 km. TC fluid isn't recommended until 100,000 km! When questioned, they said that the schedule says to inspect the fluid at that mileage, but they just replace it. The only time I EVER go to stealerships is for warranty work.

I would NOT let any dealer replace a diff carrier or ring and pinion! They will probably get it wrong (gear setup) and you will be back time and time again. Get a complete used axle and get someone to install it, you will be way happier in the long run. I did a quick search on car-part.com and Arnprior has a low-mile rear axle for 1000$ with 3.07 gears.

1000$ for a drum-to-drum rear diff is not bad, someone can install it for you in 3-4 hours, 1400-1500$ and you're off, plus you will have spare axles and some other parts left over.

Make sure you are comparing apples to apples, if the dealership quoted you a proper job (all bearings replaced, ring and pinion, carrier, setup, etc) and the local dealership is quoting you a hack job with partial replacement (what shape are the bearings, parts in?) you may find that THEY are ripping you off by quoting a band-aid solution.

For a D44 rear, maybe $1k ... I sold my d35 earlier this year for $100. There are a couple of D35/D30 combo's on jeep kings with 4.10's for $500 (in Windsor).

I also saw an 8.8 setup for a TJ /w 4.10's for $900, as a comparison as well.

My recommendations were done under the assumption that the guy needs his rig on Friday. If he had more time an upgrade would definitely be better...

Okay So its not still not done. But I got it all worked out...

Only problem is Im sopose to go to Kingston this weekend
(this happend at the worst time! 2trips-2weeks...)
Would it be okay to drive it from Ottawa to Kingston in Front wheel drive? Like if I disconnect the rear end and put it in 4x4?
If so what all Should I do?

The other reality is that it is not just him out there on the roads.

It would really suck to ruin someone else's life because of being too cheap to rent a car.

Im not trying to be cheap. Id rent a car if I could but Im only 20. And the repairs are already hurting my wallet

You should be able to rent a cargo van or pickup. It'll get about the same mileage, maybe better, than your Jeep.

Driving a 4x4 running off the front propshaft at highway speeds when it is completely avoidable is a really bad idea. The Jeep will have quirky handling and if you run into any kind of a problem like accident avoidance or slippery roads you will end up in the ditch. Or worse, run into head on traffic. Or maybe nothing will happen at all. It's a gamble every day you start your vehicle's engine.

Also, the axle in the rear is broken. It's just a matter of time before it gets so broken that the rear wheels will not roll. You really want to be stuck somewhere between Kingston an Kanata with a Jeep on the side of the road that won't roll?

Logically, it does not make any sense to take your Jeep until it is fixed.

Maybe I'm coming off like a prick about this? The 4x4 scene has enough bad PR about unsafe vehicles and such. It's not safe and exposes you and others to potential problems or danger.
