It's a 1999 Chev Silverado 1500 Ext cab 2WD with i think the 5.3 L Vortec 5300 V8

How would this do for a tow rig (TJ and trailer)??

I can't speak for the truck, but I would think it would pull fine as well. Just double check it has a towing capacity of at least 7k.

I have been on several dirt hills that I have been glad to have 4x4 though... not sure I would ever buy a 4x2.

Cool first hit was the exact truck you are looking at.

http://www.theautochannel.com/vehicles/new/reviews/1999/russ9911.html

4365 curb weight, 8200lbs towing.
Assume at least a 2000lb trailer, which means as to stay under your towing weight you are getting one with 3500lb axles.
Is the TJ going to weigh under 5k?
You will need a weight distribution hitch to keep it all safely under control. 5000lbs is all a class III/IV hitch is usually allowed without it. I have had one all these years that I used to use when towing with the Cherokee but never had "time" to put the 2 clamps with a bolt on each on my trailer and really did not seem to need it with the Excursion although I was still over 5k. I finally put mine on this year.......wow. Anyway after that I went and bought one of the newer trunion style ones with anti-sway on Kijiji for $250 so you don't even have to shell out big bucks.
Just note that with a pickup since it is black plates that to be legal you will need to sticker the truck and trailer as the combo will be over 4500kg (10120) 4235+~7000 unless the TJ is skinny and you buy a light trailer like Marek did.

Talk to Richard - he towed the YJ down to Moab with his if I remember correctly, and had no issues.

EDIT: BTW, there's a 97 F250 (or might be 350 - I didn't look that close) out in CP for $3K as is at All Purpose Towing. Auto/7.3 power stroke, 250K. Not sure what's wrong with it, but it looked pretty rust free for the 30 seconds I spent looking. 2wd as well. Not listed on the website:

Couldn't convince the wife to trade the TDI on it :(

Till Valhalla!
I towed mine for half a summer with a 2000 5.3 tow packaged silverado before i upgraded to 3/4 ton. It towed ok but a weight distribution hitch is a must IMHO with that setup.

Thanks all...

It's my dad's. He's "Thinking" of giving it to me as he's just not using it that much and is thinning out assets. I know that he's taken care of it so i am all for it. He's though of the opinion that it will not meet my needs and is now thinking of just selling it. Based on the comments here though, it would / should meet the requirements. At the very least at first it should be sufficient for hauls to Cloyne/Calabogie, etc....

The TJ will have ton's, the hemi, caged, etc... So not sure if it'll be under 5K lbs. I know my first TJ was around 4500lbs if i recall without the tons, the 2.5L and armored/caged....

keep in mind when buying a tow rig that whaever you are towing will change every year till you think you got it right . Then it will change every 2 years till you die lol.
I say buy a big tow rig now like an old diesel power stroke or cummins and forever be happy, oh an like Brad says 4x4 is for real .

Cheers,

With what you save getting a tow rig from your dad, could you find a lighter aluminum trailer to help cut back on weight?

That's probably what i would like to do.... From what i understand, those aluminum trailers are significantly lighter but am having a hard time finding exact weights (This is always missing on the sites i have visited??). I have an inquiry out to a co in Peterborough who sells RC trailers... Prices are not TOO bad i guess.....

Got a reply back.. Basically an 18' aluminum trailer is around 1400lbs. Ad to that say 4500lbs at worst for the jeep, i'd be looking at a max of 6000lbs..

If i understand Dwayne's numbers, i am under the towing limits correct?

Looks like you'd be under, with a little wiggle room for supplies and stuff. No clue on the sticker portion though.

Mine was a 2000 4WD but otherwise the same with 8,000 lbs towing cap. It pulled fine, I went to Moab twice and even over the Colorado mountains it worked great. Sure a diesel 3/4 ton would pull easier and use less fuel, but the 1/2 ton will do the job as long as you watch your cargo weight. My trailer was a steel one weighing 1,800 lbs and with the 4,700 lbs Jeep, pickup cap, cargo, fuel and people (you have to add up EVERYTHING you add to the truck) I think I pushed the 8k towing limit.

Thanks Richard.. I was waiting for your post. I wish i still had your trailer :) It's not that much heavier than the aluminum one.. Surprising.
