Main article: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid (ZVW35) is based on a third generation Toyota Prius (model ZVW30) with a a 4.4-kWh lithium-ion battery that allows an all-electric range of 14.3 mi (23 km).[6] A global demonstration program involving 600 pre-production test cars began in late 2009 and is taking place in Japan, Europe, Canada, China, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.[52][53][54]

The production version was unveiled at the September 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and sales are scheduled to begin in Japan, the United States and Europe by early 2012.[6] Deliveries scheduled for retail sales in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2012 and will be initially offered in 14 states.[55] Toyota announced that initially it expects to sell 15,000 units a year in the U.S., and retail sales price in that country will start at US$32,000 plus a US$760 delivery fee and before any applicable government incentives.[56]

Not really, I'd bet the gas engine in the car is more efficient and less polluting than the generator. The only reason I see this good for is testing it for a future all electric car. But more than likely it's just a redneck idea ;)
