Importing a rig from the U.S

Has anyone imported a used car from the U.S? I understand the RIV and all the rules, and am assuming that a modified rig won't pass this inspection at Crappy Tire? But maybe bringing one in and using it as a parts doner?? Ie: using all of the imported trucks parts except for my Canadian VIN tags?:smokin:

any ideas here?

I brought in a rig last spring with no problems. I didnt even have papers or VIN!
Just put it on a trailer and claim it as a pile of parts. You pay tax on whatever it cost, (make up receipt).

Lot easier then going through those other steps...

Hmmm....I bought my Excursion in NY a couple of years ago and from what I understand there is the limited time (30 days I believe) to get the inspection for Canadian standards done and I believe that if you don't that they will make you take it back out of the country. I am not positive about that. Call RIV directly they were pretty good to deal with when I was bringing my truck in as I had some questions on it going into a corporation. I would tell them that you want to import a vehicle for parts only and see what their rules are. But call RIV and confirm with them that it even has to go through all their hoops if you are going to "part" it out. Because from what I understand they only want you to comply if you want to license and safety it here. Note that if you go this route it will mean that you will never be able to license that vehicle up here with that VIN.

Was the engine in the bay?
The rig in question will be pretty close to complete, so I'm not sure this route will fly?? But I know for sure, If I take a truck on 35's or bigger into Cdn Tire to get daytime running lights hooked up they are going to blow a gasket!

easy enough to "disable" a vehicle sufficiently to make it a pile of parts.

Yes, the vehicle was complete and driving (drove onto the trailer).
It looks(ed) like hell though, so that probably helped my case. I mean, there was no doors or fenders, and very little for a box. The guys at the border didnt even come to inspect it up close, just glanced out the window and said 'Yep, looks like some parts'.
Was kinda surprised how easy it was. I think the more it looks like a street-worthy vehicle, the tougher they'll be...
