SO I bought a rough shape '78 CJ5 for my wife. (shes a jeep freak, but only CJ's) Of course i need some parts to safety it. I picked up a '71 CJ and now realize there isn't much the same on it. Can anyone tell me what is the same between the 2 jeeps? And if there isn't really anything I can use, I will put the '71 back up for sale. Thx.

A lot of stuff changed between the Kaiser years to the AMC years. IIRC ~'72-'73 is when the bulk of the changes occurred.

Off the cuff, only the Saginaw steering box is the same. Even the shape of the windshield frame got some "tumblehome" added with the AMC revamp. As a result the soft and hard tops are not a straightforward change.

Confirm elsewhere but I don't think the '71 is much use to you. The CJ7 is a better parts match. AMC era '5s and '7s are more or less identical except for the tub and frame.
