Machine Shop services

So I screwed up my Panhard build today. Was all proud of myself for fish mouthing the end of the tube with a mini die grinder. Welded the end for the Johnny Joint on. Hmm, seems awfully long... Doh! Got a little carried away I guess.

I can cut the other end of the tube but will need to get the inside re-threaded for the TRE.

Can you recommend a machine shop that has taps on hand in the 1" or so range? Appears the thread is 1" - 14 TPI.

TIA

I'll give my Dad a call. He took a semi-retirement job over at Busy Bee, and runs the machine section there.

Provided he's got the right tools, he said he can make parts for me gratis, anytime. (He's a tool and die maker, if you remember, loves this stuff).

I'll give him a call to ask if he has what he needs on hand to do this. He'd be more than happy to work on it.

Sounds similar to my drag link I had done up for my 1ton steering, I had to cut off 1/2 inch of each end as the rod bottomed out so I couldn't get my steering wheel straight.

I used the chop saw, I had the taps so I just ran them through again, it was easy as the saw didn't muck up the threads.

Gengeral grinding could do it for sure.

Chris,

Sorry for the late reply, but here is what Ray had to say:

1" 14 TPI is a National Special thread (as opposed to Fine or Coarse).

Busy Bee doesn't carry taps that big, but you can get them at Proam on Industrial (I think that's what he said). But the tap'll run ya about $69.

He said you can also chase it on a lathe if you're stuck, but that's really not the way to go.

Sorry dude.

I don't mind buying him the tap if it'll git-r-done. Still be cheaper than ordering new fab parts from JKS.

Can General Grinding do it for less than the price of the tap?

If not, then get the tap and head on over to see Ray. Gimme a head's up if you're going to though, I don't know his schedule.
