MTO season

I was talking to a local mechanic this past week and he was saying that the MTO will be focusing on and targeting us non-commercial guys towing loads and checking for valid yellow stickers this season :pissed:. I don't know how reliable this info is but I thought I'd pass it along. I figure I'll finally get my yellow sticker this year (for the RC trip).

CVOR and the yellow sticker are not the same thing.

CVOR is Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registry -- We should be exempt from this
Yellow sticker is for the annual inspections -- many of us "should" have this one.

I've never understood people's hesitations on the annual inspections. Once a year it forces us to have someone else look over your truck & trailer for things we miss or never bother to look for.
Peace of mind if you ask me.

I often think they'd be more useful for keeping the shit boxes off the road than the E-tests.

I agree, like you said, it's another set of eyes especially for the trailer which can often get neglected. Drving the 417 often I see quite a few "questionable" vehicles haulin "questionable" loads.

After my experiences with MTO I certainly believe that we are a target.....since an MTO Officer told me that we are.....
Any of us that tow are over 4500kg combined weight, therefore need a anual inspection (yellow sticker), which even in e-test exempt areas (Renfrew County) requires an e-test and since now you are considered a commercial motor vehicle. You don not need a CVOR though, as the you truck falls under the "personal use pickup" exemption, which means no CVOR, log book or circle check required.
Truck and trailer need a anual inspection, exept RVs. The truck has to be licenced, sticker on your plate, for the total combined wieght, truck + trailer + load, if the trialers weight, exerted on the road (not counting hitch weight) is over 2800kg. Mine is licenced for 10,000kg btw, which is about $450 per year.
In addition to that if your trailer is over 4600kg you need a class A drivers licence to pull it.

happy towing....

I'm not too sure about the E-test bit - the only thing I saw about that for pickups is if it's over 4500kg, but is that curb weight or GVWR? Plus when I upped my weight to 7k Kg, the DMV people never asked for nor mentioned I would need one.

FWIW, ALL vehicles with black lettered plates are considered "Commercial", it's just the red "for personal use" sticker that differentiates the two.

And don't forget it is not just RV's, SUV's do not follow these rules so long as you have the "blue plate" which makes it "dual-purpose" like a RV (which I have on my Excursion which is licensed to my corportation). John from MTO told me that the only rule SUV's and RV's have is that they can not tow more than 44??-46?? it,( is not the 4500 it is the trailer weight number) But the reality he says that the only way to check that is with scales while hooked to the vehicle so it is really the weight exerted on the road and if you are running a load balancing setup then you are allowed on Class III hitches to have 1200lbs (~550kg) more than the real limit. Oh yeah the part I like too is that cars have the same rules, so have at it with your Prius! Of course if they deem you are unsafe towing you trailer with your vehicle then you are screwed.

right....I was refering to RV trailers, but as Dwayne says, blue plates are magical. The trailer weight is 4600kg, same as the class A cutoff..
Dwayne and I are "lucky" to have an MTO officer in town who gladly answers questions....and then ofcourse hold you to the law. :p
