Not sure if TJ and XJ are compatible or if its YJ and XJ boxes that are the same, one of those two combos..lol.. look into it if you want..I have a spare here off a 96 XJ, was going to keep it but blew valve cover gasket or rear main seal today so need to get money for that, the jeep the old box is off of was on the road, could let it go for 60 bucks if it fits...Let me know..

YEs the XJ is the same. I found it lasted longer then the oem POS TJ one.

Although you mentioned you wanted to keep it cheap if you ended up having to get a rebuilt TJ, you are better off getting the V8 Durango box. They are about the same price but it is beefier and a direct bolt-on
