this design is kinda ugly... like they couldn't make up their mind

It's not unlike what you see on high performance car tires. Lots of solid rubber blocks on the outside to increase cornering force, small blocks on the inside to deal with greasy road conditions.

From a looks perspective where are the side biters? It's not going to be that great a mud tire.
