On the way home last week, I stopped in a drive through, and dropped the trans in neutral. With the window down, I could hear a squealing/grinding noise, sounded like it was coming from underneath me. Putting the trans back in gear, or park, the noise went away. RPM didn't change, tried different RPMs in park, drive and neutral, still only heard it in neutral.

Any thoughts on what the hell this could be? I would have expected most of the major components to be spinning just the same in...

It's possible that the friction material on one of the bands has become un-bonded, and in neutral it's rubbing on the spinning drum that would otherwise be stopped in park or in gear.
