Re-installing my distributor... Forgot to make notes...

OK. When i tore down the engine, i DID NOT make any notes on the positioning or placement of the distributor into the block. Only now, after reading through my TSM do I see that i should have made some notes.

Since that time, the dist. shaft has spun, the cylinders moved up and down, etc......

I was looking last night at now reconnecting the distributor and noticed that i was supposed to have made note of the locations, etc....

Have i caused a conundrum? Can i "Undo" what i might...

All is not lost (BTDT)!

You need to bring the #1 cylinder to top dead centre on the compression stroke (TDC).

Pull the plug from #1, place thumb over #1 spark plug hole, bump engine over with starter until you feel compression - #1 is now on compression stroke.

Place plastic drinking straw in #1 spark plug hole so it rests against piston top.

Turn engine by hand with socket on harmonic balancer / crank until straw reaches apex of travel - #1 is now at TDC.

Figure out which post in your dist. is #1.

Drop dist in. so that as the oil pump gear rotates it, it alligns with #1 mark (you do have to know basically which way the dist. faces - like within 90* - which you can get from a picture).

If ya got fuel and air, it should fire, and you can set the timing.

Engine is on an engine stand so allot of what you are asking is not possible. Perhaps i will leave this then as the last thing to do.

Thanks for the info.

??

On a stand the only thing you might have to do is use jumper cables to hook a battery to the starter, then use a wire to go from B+ and just touch the solenoid to bump it.

or you could even turn the whole thing over by hand all the way (socket on crank sbout) - just more effort that way.

will work either way.

or, drop the dizzy in last as you say - that works too.

Like Bill says, just roll it over by hand.
make is easy on yourself and pull all the plugs. If you do, you should be able to grab the balancer by hand and turn it. if you dont feel compression, pul the valve cover, bring #1 to TDC and check if both valves are closed. I fnot roll it 360 degrees and done.

Thanks all. Bare with me as this IS THE FIRST engine i have ever worked on to this extent. In essence, learning as i go on the 2.5L.

At this point, i have all the plugs pulled, the cylinder head is removed (Well, it's back on, however i have not yet tightened down the bolts/studs nor have the rockers/rods/bridges been tightened down yet. Oill pan is back on. Water pump is back on and torqued. Timing belt cover is back on and torqued. Balancer is back on and torqued. Vib damper is back on and torqued and fan.

Nothing else is back on at this time.
