Shop recommendation

Hi,

I'm new to OVO and this whole off-roading scene.
I purchased my first Jeep last summer and it was just at the dealership for it's 20,000km service. The service rep said I need to have the differential fluid changed and I was just wondering if anyone on here could recommend a good shop where I could get the work done.

The dealership quoted me $275 to just change the fluids, which seems rather ridiculous to me since it doesn't seem like that hard a job. I'd attempt to do it myself but...

Also, assuming it is like a TJ, the only time you need to change it is if the following:
1. You tow it a lot
2. You offroad a lot and especially if you submerge it.

Correct me if I am wrong

I did mine in September as I bought it in June and had no idea what the history is on it. I did it in my driveway and the hardest part was getting the new fluid into it. (Crappy tire sells the hose that goes on the bottle)

I had mine done at my mechanics. I think it was around a hundred for front and rear on a ZJ. Let me check the bill... ok more like 180. Place is called Edsons.
1690 Doheny St
Ottawa, ON K2A 1J4
(613) 792-1110
Accross from the new Cdn Tire on carling, on the side street, right at the lights from the parking lot of Cdn Tire.

However, I wouldn't get it changed. The Dodge/Jeep dealership in Kanata needlessly did ours on the Nitro without even asking. Really is NOT needed at this stage with your vehicle.

My shop can do it. I'll find out tomorrow what it would cost. If the fluid is in good condition there's no reason to change it, unless you've had it in water/mud over the axle there's no reason. dealers follow the service recommendation, and change things just because it says so not because they need to.

Thanks for the replies.

It's a JK and according to the dealer it needs the front and rear fluid replaced.
I have a Rubicon with the Dana44s so there's drain and fill holes so there's no reason to take the diff covers off to do this service, which is why I can't swallow a $275 bill for it.

I have taken it off-road a few times last summer/fall and did go through some deep puddles but nothing since.
The service tech said there's moisture in the front and the rear is really dirty.

If they have fill and drain plugs it shouldn't be more that 1/2hour the change both. But I'll find out exactly tomorrow.

We can do it as well - 2207 Carling, special prices for OVO members :)

Speaking of which Mitko, I still plan on coming for my alignment. We had just bought the house and money got real tight real fast. We're hoping that before the snow is melted we can get it done. I'll be in touch

I suspect that part of the reason for the high price is you are supposed to use synthetic in the rear diff. It doesn't explain it all though.

Donnelly Ford quoted me yesterday $180.00 to change the rear diff fluid in our 2008 F450 with 23000KM the mechanic said it looked a little milky. I asked her why it cost so much to change 1 diff? She told me "because it was a Dana 80" She didn't seem impressed when I chuckled and told her to forget it we would do it ourself. :banghead:

Mitko where do you work? I need a line-up on my roller skate (VW TDI).

Ok before I call Donnelly's back, there was a charge on my invoice for rear axle seals. We had a annual safety check done to it. It said that they may have to charge extra time for the safety if they had to change the rear axle seals. So they charged me $75.00 for each seal. The rear axle is a dana 80 with disk brakes. Why would the need to change the seal to do a safety. Perhaps to check linings on the e-brake pads??? The truck is an 2008 F450 2 wheel drive.

If the seals were leaking then they would have to be changed as to not contaminate the brakes.
If they weren't leaking, they were ripping you off. Checking brakes should be all outside the axle seals.

My 2 cents

I beleve it is synthetic in the front and the rear diffs. 95w140, plus you need to put in an limited slip additive because of the lockers.

Synthetic is pretty expensive but the additive should be $10 or less per axle (probably costs about $4 at Crappy Tire).
