Single " Clunking " noise when I reverse ? Any Ideas ?

Hey everyone,

I just noticed within the last day or so that when I put my truck into reverse I get a single one time Clunking noise (thats my technical term LOL) which I can feel under the floor and through the stick shift when release the clutch and start to accelerate in reverse. Almost feels like something is skipping or not actually grabbing properly from the start....

Going forward is fine, no issues. Only in reverse... and its only once right at the start. Once I get going she runs...

In my experience, that particular clunk is the u-joint. Had it on my F-150 and motorcycle. If you crawl under and check, there should be very little movement at the joint.

so not the u-joints in the DS but in the rear diff..... has to be because I just put in NEW Moogs in the front diff about 2 months ago.... could it maybe be the DS u-joints.... Again I think not for reason that I just had a new Tom Woods DS installed 2 months ago as well....unless its the front DS because I have not swapped those out since I got the truck a year ago.... Not sure when they were replaced...

I will check and let you know.

Any other suggestions ? please do tell

Danny

Other option would be trans/t-case mounts, but I concur that it would likely be a DS joint. Remove the rear shaft, throw it in 4HI and see if it happens still. You can also crawl underneath and check for excessive play in the DS, ideally with the rear wheels jacked up.

Since it is a new rear driveshaft it is probably unlikely that but stranger things happen.
While you are at it check your control arm bushings for any play. I had a clunk when I first got mine replaced the problem control arm and it went away. But as Kunker said the linkage bushing for the Transfer Case can get wallowed out and will cause a clunking noise. But that usually shows up in forward as well. His suggestion of pulling the rear driveshaft, throw it in 4HI and seeing if it still happens is good as it removes the driveshaft as being the culprit.

All good suggestions, also check your tailpipe for a rusted off/broken hanger, the exhaust moves with the power train.(torques differently forward than reverse) and might be hitting your gas tank skid/trailer hitch/frame when in reverse only.
