I am going to dive in this weekend and start hacking away at the jeep body.

Specifically,

  • I will be cutting rust out in a few spots
  • I will be cutting open the rear fenders about an inch all around
  • I will be sanding down various surface rust spots and imperfections
Then,
  • I will be welding in patches in a few spots
  • Prepping the body for paint
What will I need from a consumables point of view? I am trying to figure out the best tool(s) to cut the...

when i did the bumper on my ranger i used 800 grit to take off the rust and then 1000 grit to sand the primer then 1200 to sand between coats of paint.

Well, both corners are completely cut out so i now have to go find myself some sheet metal. Anyone off hand know the guage for a TJ tub?

As well, can anyone tell me the best route to take for the channel that runs a good length of the tub under the seats? I had to remove about 3" of it and in the process had to remove a body mount on each side. Can you just buy this channel pre-bent at a metal shop or do i have to bend my own?

Thanks

I would start by checking what is available in patch panels at the Omix-Ada site. If it is listed there you can probably get it somewhere local or via Qtec and similar. If it is the stiffeners under the tub then you'll need to bend them up I think. You can buy them for flatties but nothing post Kaiser IIRC. Again, check Omix.

Could be a good excuse to buy a sheet metal brake.

IIRC is is 18 ga... or some vintage Jeep is 18 ga. Maybe it's 20 ga. :) Time to get a gauge at PA to go with the brake. ;)

I am pretty sure the floor on a TJ is 18, we patched mine with 16 and it was a bit thicker.
