Today is a bad day

I decided to remove the carpets from the jeep and pulled out a wire brush. My plan was to get rid of the crappy liner that was there and then reline the whole tub. I figured the worst side was on the drivers. Unsurprisingly there is surface rust and I was able to scrub most of it off. The rest can probably be stopped with some rust converter. The sad thing is the passenger side is way worse. Right where the round plug goes is now a hole about 4 inches long and probably goes for another 2-4...

i'm in the process of doing this to mine, i removed as much rust as i could treated it and cut out all the rot (there was quit a bit) then i welded in new 16 gauge sheet metal (i'm almost done) then i plan on seam sealin it, undercoating then herculining the interior. I helped a friend do it to his just before i started mine and it really isn't as big of a job as you may think, just takes time and a whole lot of patients but i'm glad to have done it as i have learned alot. So i say why not make it a spring project for yourself!

P.S. just put new steel in, it's very cheap at any hardware/autoparts store and if you can't weld you could always do all the prep work and pay someone to weld the sheet metal.

Chris,

I am getting ready to buy the same one's however i only really need the DS. We can order both and split the shipping, etc.....

PM me if interested. I have rust on the PS as well, however nowhere near as bad as yours. I'm just going to cut out the hole area and patch it with a piece of plate.

PM'd! I'll also get some photos of what it looks like on both sides.

So what does prep work entail and where would you get the steel if the rest of the pan is good enough?

cutting the rot out and sanding or grinding the rust away, then cleaning and putting down a rust converter over the metal like por - 15 to seal it up and welding in some new sheetmetal. I got my steel (16 gauge) at a local metal supply shop and bought another piece (also 16 gauge) from crappy tire when i needed more. CT had metal stock in the isle where they sell torches and welders - i assume it's the same layout in every CT

Here's the damage (sorry for the size of pictures):

Driver side

Driver side round hole is starting to rot out (should have done macro)

Passenger side

Closer pic of passenger

So the question is should I replace both pans or can I get away with just fixing the right side with a small portion of steel?

BWAHAHAHAHAHHA!!! that's not rust, that just character. Clearly you've never worked on a Samurai or Toyota before.... j/k

That's really not a hard fix, I would just replace/fix the passenger side

Could be worse and I was expecting rust not necessarily rot especially on that side since the passenger side is more empty than the driver side. However since where the hole is located is between two pieces of metal I guess the water/salt just gets in there and sits . I was planning on relining the whole interior this weekend but that more or less got nixed.
So once I find someone who is willing to fix it for me I need to see if they think replacing the whole pan is worth it or just the specific location. I would like to get this dealt with and the tub lined before end of April.

that doesn't look too bad at all, looks like alot of surface rust, just grind it or sand it away and see what you have left. It looks like they should be ok and it looks like you don't have to replace too much steel at all (way better than mine when i pulled my carpet!) then treat it with rust converter to whatever is left over if you have pitting.

X2!

The g/f's brother & uncle just spent the day patching my 'Runner frame. Not sure what was actually holding the link mounts to the frame! Gotta love 15 year old Jap metal.

Thanks all, planning on getting the holes patched with Andrew's assistance.
It was a definite surprise to see the rot but looking at it today I realized it looked like it was not a disaster.
Definitely not as bad a day as Matt's.

Use a hammer (chiping one for welding works best for me) and sound out the whole pan to see if there are any other spots getting soft. In my experience, even if you buy a full pan, you only replace what is needed. Somtimes it's cheaper to just buy a chunk locally if you only need a small bit that is mostly flat.
From the pic, it doesn't look like more than a couple hours work to cut/grind/weld the patch.

That hole is not part of the body mount is it?

Well that floor pan shouldn't be part of the body mount. However it looks like someone broke the body mount bolts or captured nuts, drilled them out and ran the bolts right into the cab. Definetly not the way to do it. The floor isn't designed to hold the weight of the body.

I went out and looked. The body mount is farther up the body. The bolts are from the AtoZ rocker guards.

Went over to Andrew's place today and he was kind enough to give me a hand getting it fixed. The hole has been patched and was an awesome job. Also got the 3 nutserts done on my driver side which needed replacing.
Thanks again!!
