Front or rear? And there wasn't a 96 YJ or TJ, so can you confirm what vehicle the locker came out of, and if it was the rear, did it have a D35 or D44.

I believe since it is a YJ that it will be for a Dana 35 which you may or may not have. Typing in "96 ZJ rear axle" (google is handy) netted me alot of info, this one seems pretty good http://csloffroad.com/jeepzjxjwjaxleinfo.aspx and it seems that all the V8's came with the Aluminum Dana 44 (D44a). So no that wouldn't work, even if it did since it is an entire carrier you would need to have your gears set up when you put it in which leaves you with the problem of having somebody set up used gears and a lot of shops won't. There should be a tag on your rear axled saying what it is and the gear ratio and while you are under there look and see if the housing is aluminum. If so your options are very limited.

IM pretty sure I have the dena 35 c clip, illl check when I get back to town. I have the inline 6. The gear set I'm not to worried about, I'm a mechanic so I could do it my self. Just still new to the whole jeep sence and I've always had fwd cars so don't know to to much about the different axels

Check your gear ratio, I have a D35 from a Grand, not sure which model with a trac-lock already in it. It is 3.73 gears so you would only have to change your brakes if you are interested.
