Unknown noise

Hello all,

I have just recently noticed (within the last week) a winding noise coming from directly under the jeep. I have not done anything (upgrades) to the jeep since last year.

The noise only happens when the jeep is in motion. Do not hear it when its at a stand still.

I do not beleive that its coming from the engine because when I am rolling and I press the clutch in and the noise still remains.

When I accelerate it seems to get a tiny bit louder/quicker and when I come to stop it...

I'd have to poke around the vehicle a bit but I'd inclined to think its the transfer case.

Winding or Whining noise?

I would exclude the driveshafts from your list.

Is it engine or speed dependant?
More or less whinin in hi or lo?
Is it in the front, center or rear of the vehicle?

Check your transfer case and transmission fluid level. Likely the former, transmission low typically means a jerky start from stop.

If is a whining noise, or quiet bearing noise, then I would check your rear axle bearings. I just had the same thing. Thought it was in the tcase but after draining it and refill still the same. Checked diff fluid, full and good. Then i drove another 20 yards and the bearing blew apart and my wheel and axle came out. Not Fun. It wasn't loud and is wasn't a squealing noise like a bearing usually is.
