WARN FF Kit Discontinued

I'm probably like one of ten people on the planet that cares about this but I thought I'd post it anyway. :)

The Warn site didn't seem to have the full float kit for rear axles listed any more. I emailed them and yep, the full float kits have been discontinued.

So, I'm casually looking around for options (i.e. doing research) for my YJ. I really wanted to duplicate what I have for the XJ but oh well.

I'm looking for a light axle about 60"-63" wide with a centered differential housing that...

LOL

So, lots of people complain about the 9" diff input being too low when wheeling.

Is this a real issue or just bench warming belly aching? Not that it would affect my decision, just curious.

Seeing as it comes with new tubes, etc.. I am assuming you can rotate the pinion up and use a CV drive shaft.

Yes, would do that for certain.

Still haven't settled on a transfer case yet so have no idea on how long the shaft is going to be or where the transfer case will be sited.

Jeep has a NP207 in it and I pulled a NP231AMC out of an XJ on the weekend. I may use the 231 or source a 241C. I have a SBC/700R4 to go into the Jeep so its still kinda in the air. As the Jeep sits now the shaft is not at that severe an angle. That's with a 4" lift and a ~1" transfer case drop.

Could always stick one of those little shovel shaped guards on the front of the pinion I guess.

We'll see.

Really smitten with the 9" idea but just to kick another idea around...

How light can you make a C&C 14B with disk brakes? Anyone have an idea of weight? Can it be converted to 5 on 5.5"? Grady's use to make a new hub ($$$) that was 5 on 5.5" but I think they went out of business or something - web presence is gone. 63" is really just a touch too wide and I don't want to run 1" spacers on the front if I can avoid it.

??

So, if I'm reading that right we are talking about the pinion being ~0.75" below that of a Dana 44? Doesn't sound like a big deal to me.

Would be even less once rotated up for the SYE and shaft.

Early Broncos and Ford PUs have been running these things forever, really can't be that big a deal.

When I weighed in all my 14B parts except for axle shafts, it was 315lbs dry. Thats housing, hubs, rotors, calipers, pinion assembly, carrier w/ crown.

I stopped at that because I broke the scale (it was from the bathroom).

I remember somewhere someone had a spindle that bolted to a housing end and it became a FF with the addition of a stock hub off something...Just cant remember where...

I have there price book from Feb, should be close.

See what they offer, its a bolt on, but requires welding a flange.

Wow, that is quite heavy.

I'm intrigued by the Diamond housing. Toyota (Aisin) third members have much better tolerances and build/design quality compared to the Dana stuff. How do they compare to Ford 9" stuff? TLC 9.5" is a great diff. Probably be more expensive to build compared to the 9"?

What ratio do you want to run and what rubber? If it's a factory Toyota ratio, a cruiser diff might be a good choice, the 9.5 diff is plenty for a pretty large tire. But that 9 inch floater setup looks slick.

I'm aiming for 4.56:1 in the diff. I might go 4.88:1 but that is unlikely the way I'm thinking at the moment (700R4 and SBC just don't need gearing that low for my intended usage).

IIRC the TLC stuff has roughly similar ratios.

Tire sizes will be 265-285-305 depending on what I'm doing. It'll be 265s (~33" in Intercos) to start for certain since I have like three sets of tires in that size kicking around the shop and barn. I have 33x12.5x15 BFG MTs under the YJ currently but they are already spoken for. :)

Reality is that both 9" and TLC would be way strong... Dana 44 / ChryCo 8.25 is about as big as I feel I need but the desire for FF is making me look at bigger stuff.

Just noticed that the Diamond axle at ~$900 intro price is not FF. Hmm...

There are other housings for Ford 9"

SpiderTrax, Mad4WD, Ballistic Fab (New)

If you are dead set of a full float, which for all intensive purposes is ideal and what I prefer.

A stock Dana60 housing w/ 35 spline shafts, have the bottom shaved and plated, truss it and forget about it.

A D60 isnt that big, but if you can get one cheap, you can spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Don't forget, your going to drag your ass anyways, so whats 1" worth to you?

Yeah, I'm not so much worried about the diff dragging per se. i'm not adverse to shaving the housing at all.

I'm more worried about the weight and width. These Jeeps are vehicles that I plan to keep "forever" so whatever little optimizations I can do with respect to weight, strength, balance, mpg, etc. I'll chase. The abandoned engineer's mind is a sick place.

What does a Dana 60 weigh? Are we talking ~250 lbs or much heavier? I'm assuming I'd have to cut it down to ~61" since nothing came factory that width and FF.

Another thing you will have to remember, cheap, light, strong. Pick two.

I understand what your saying, If I had the money there would be Spider9's under my car already. I just picked the two that applied to my wallet.

I think at this point I'm going to go with the custom 9". It fits my budget (i.e. not stoopid expensive) and is a nice balance of strength and weight and I can spec my WMS.

Back to the XJ. Fine tuning stuff is tiresome. I think I've had the TNT belly pan on and off about a half dozen times today. LOL
