I still think that XJs are one of the best values out there. They have their issues but overall they are a good vehicle. Drivetrain-wise, they are pretty bulletproof for what they were designed to do.

The VMs are TRASH. They were in Euro Range Rovers too and they were complete total utter scrapola.. I think the early ones with Peugeot diesels could be fun, those motors are super heavy duty for their size and I would bet you could get a decent amount of power out of a turbo one.
I have driven one of the early diesel powered ones. It was reasonably responsive for a 4 cyl in a faily heavy chassis...would be cool to get my hands on one now.
