ZJ Differential Upgrade Question

I've been thinking about upgrading the differentials, and am looking for advice. It's a 94 Grand Cherokee (ZJ), 4.0L, Dana30 front, Dana35 c-clip rear, 3.73 gears, 31" tires. I want to go to 4.10 gears with a locker in the rear. At this point I'm not considering Dana44's because I don't think we stress things enough to worry about the axles, and we aren't considering larger tires, not to mention the extra cost. You already know 35 c-clips are weak, I wouldn't spend the money on regearing it, 31's should be fine with 3.73.
It would probably live locked with 31's for a while if you're not too abusive.

yeah, IMO if your only running 31's stick with the axles you have unless you can find a wicked deal on a set of 44's or at least just swap in a rear 44 as the 30 will be fine with 31's.

The way you guys drive you will be fine with a locker in the rear of the d35 on your 31's. As for the locker you are about $300 shipped to ogdensburg for an Aussie, plus then your oil, and RTV sealant. Dirk helped me install my locker on Thursday and it was easy as pie. As soon as you have it all apart, it litteraly took us 15 mins to install the locker in the carrier.
As for regearing, don't waist your money. With 3.73 gears and an auto trans on your 31's you are just fine.

This has come up because the rear dif cover is literally rotting out and needs replacing. Ty was figuring time to upgrade? Guess not.

So I made a mistake. Apparently the Jeep has 3.55 gears. And Jen has informed me that she will eventually want more lift and larger tires, so at some point we'll upgrade to a D44 with 4.10s (probably next summer). And to avoid spending money twice on the same thing, the locker will wait until the same time.

Isn't the Ford 8.8 also a good candidate for the back in a ZJ? Just another option down the road.
