Axle Tube Removal

Ok I need to remove the axle tubes from carrier housings. Does anybody have experience with this or somebody who can do it reasonably? From what I understand after all the grinding is done it requires heat, big hammers and a press. Input from personal experience is required please as to how big a press and where you attach it to pull it.

Thanks
Dwayne

I knew a guy at NRC that did this for me in his spare time using the machines it there. Of course, I don't know have contact info for him anymore...
I don't know if he pressed it out, I actually think he just used a lathe and cut it out.
You would need an extremely strong press to do this. That being said, couldnt you just sleeve it? Like find a piece of DOM that will slide into the old axle tube stub and into the new one?

if you go to a machine shop, you can probably have them cut the tubes off, mount the housing in a milling machine and bore out the rest of the tube. if your in ottawa, there is a place called Shore machine works, they have very large equipment and i think the labour costs are around $60 /h.

cheers

There is a guy up in Stewartville nmaed Peter D he has a machine shop with all the milling equipment at his home and usually is very good with prices. He can pretty much to anything and usually is up for a challenge. Don't know if this will help ya but he isn't far for you to go.

With the Long's you would still have that little ring gear to worry about.

Ask Mitko about his old TJ and the exploding spider gears on the Quinn.

I can do this but I really don't recommend it. $$$ plus it will be crooked when you press the new tubes in plus the DOM is $$$. What kinda housing is it? Maybe you can get a housing that's the right center section with tubes that are too long and cut them down?

If I did it I would cut the tubes flush with a bandsaw, stand up the chunk on a rotary table on a mill and machine out the chunk, but those welds are hard and it would be hard on cutters.
