Paint Q's

I am getting close to the paint stage of my CJ2A and wondering how much paint (ballpark) should I price out? I asked about a gallon today and the guy looked at me funny and said that would probaly be too much.

For those that have painted a tub before, would be nice to hear how much you went through. I'll be painting both sides of the tub including the hood, fenders, windshield frame... 2 coats.

Also, a good place in Ottawa? (Randalls?)

Thanks

Also I don't know how far along you are but get a pint of good quality self etching primer and a good two quarts of high solids and/ or a primer sealer(and their activators/reducers) . Spray the self etch on any...even the smallest spot of bare metal before you move on to high solids primer and then/or a primer sealer.

My 2 cents

the body is already coated with the expoxy primer from the sandblaster.

Keep in mind it's WWII Olive Drab lusterless. It's not shiny.

So I setup my paint booth and did some painting, Im all done, just going to do a quick coat once the body parts are back together.

Im a newbie at using a paint gun, it was pretty easy, I used a HVLP one from PA, I think it was 20$, worked well. The only thing I learned is thinning out the paint. AT first it wasn't working well, I just didn't have the paint thin enough.

What paint did you go with?
Where'd you get it?
What did it end up costing (If you don't mind me asking)?

Just trying to compare against my painting costs to finish my OD TJ CLICK HERE

Olive Drab Early WWII Lusterless from Willys Acres.
I think it's 75$ a gallon.

I still have half a gallon left for touch ups and other misc stuff like seat frames, gas tank, winshield frame (outer) and rims. Even with that I won't use it all. I also have 3 rattle cans of the same color as well, althought it doesn't match quite as well, I guess with the mixing of thinner it makes a bit of a difference.

Using the little 99$ car shelter with vapor barrier on the floor worked well, painting with the gun is easy, once you play around with it. I doubt I could do a showroom quality paint job, but for the Cj2a (looking like a M38) and other things I might paint like trailers and stuff. it's better then rattle cans.

Well to put things into perspective, i used the OD Krylon cammo paint in a rattle can to do my TJ. I did every single square inch of the body parts, two coats. It took 39 cans @ around $6.50/can. So in paint alone it cost me over $250.00. The BIG downside was that it was extremely slow. With a gun (Which i have), it would have been so much faster. That was the direction i wanted to take, however i couldn't find a reasonably priced paint (Best i got was $200/Gal) until AFTER i was done with the rattle cans....

Cheers,

Cheers,

I ad the big idea of buying local paint, but they sell automotive paint, not industrial paint, which is what this stuff is. and it's flat. The paint places couldn't get it completely flat. They said industrial paint is so mass produced, it is cheaper and they can do flat. School buses, machinery paint are some of the examples they used.

I think this paint came from Texas, www.rapcoparts.com, it's cheap , but UPS charges Hazmat fees hence the price goes up.

IIRC the rattle cans were 13$ each, with a gallon I have lots.
