Tube Purchase

Hey, I just picked myself up a bender from JD2 and I need to know a place where I can get some 1.75" tube steel somewhere in the Valley or Ottawa. Closer to Petawawa the better, PEMCO steel uses silly metric sizes like 1.66 or 1.9. Anyone know anywhere with good prices?

Loucon (Merivale & Slack) is the most common for us.
Product listing:

Check the material you're getting: There's pipe (pg 16), HREW (pg 17) & DOM (pg 18).

The 1.66 is actually a common size and it's imperial not metric, just happens to use decimals rather than fractions cause it's much more accurate.
Don't buy pipe if you are using a tubing bender. It's a less consistant quality of product than HREW or DOM and I've read it will fawk up you bender.
DOM is nice but WAY expensive, I'd use HREW

Mike, Loucon's is great. They're usually pretty quick to get me out the door satisfied with my order :)

When you home from GT? I'd still like to see if your JD2 will match up with my bender dies or if it's modeled after the PT105.

Hey thanx all for the info and I downloaded that catalog from Loucon's, they do look like a pretty good place.
Nick, my last day before the break is the 11th, so I should be home some time late that night, or into the 12th a little bit. The ms, will be at work all the following week, so I will set it up and give you a call to come try those dies out. Im gonna ty to rip off some cage extensions and some other projects with it while im home. Does anyone find using HREW for cage a bad idea? One of the boys in the shop at work was saying that HREW has come a long way in the strength dept, due to manufacturing techniques and all. Just wondering on the strength of HREW vs. DOM. Obviously I dont want the cage to fold in on the wife. Thats probably not good relationship skills....

The biggest thing with HREW is to try to have the seam on the side of the bend. Lots of us have used HREW or even pipe in our cages as DOM is simply way too expensive. If the cage is properly designed there should be no issues by using less than DOM. The biggest difference that I've noticed between HREW and DOM for a cage is that HREW will dent more easily but that's on buggies and such where the tubes take more of a beating.

Also, if you didn't notice Loucon has free delivery on orderes over $150, not sure how far up the valley they'd go but worth asking

Something is telling me they only go as far as Arnprior. I'm not sure why but I seem to recall seeing or hearing that somewhere...

Pretty sure it's on their website somewhere...I remember seeing something like "free delivery any time in Ottawa, or once a week to Arnprior and somewhere else (Smiths Falls?) on orders over $150". The Arnprior part stuck out since I'm between Ottawa and Arnprior.

Edit: It's in the metal PDF on page 4 - Arnprior and Kemptville were the two places.

how about Valley Sales in Renfrew? I've heard they have a good selection of steel I'm not sure about DOM though.

Lol!! Yes they do, they are actually a customer of mine and I got a price from them on Friday but I never got a chance to phone Loucon and I was just curious what anybody else had bought tube for recently to see if I should post up their prices. BTW steel must be down as their prices seemed pretty good compared to the last numbers I heard. AJ told me $7 something for 1 3/4 and $9 something for 2". (the actual numbers are at work).

Ok first here are the correct prices at Valley Sales 1.5 $ 7.00 per foot, 1.75 $ 9.80 per foot and 2.00$ 11.20 per foot.
I called Loucon and asked for prices on all of these and the guy I was talking to there said that 1.5 only was only in stock in .375 and 1.75 in .25 wall. I could special order .120 but it would be a couple of weeks to come in.
So where is everybody getting there tube from?

Most of us don't use DOM. Loucon usually only keeps HREW in stock. Metal Supermarket in the East end stock DOM but they are pricey.

If I was you I would just order exactly what you need from Loucon. Like I said at the meeting, I would go a combination of DOM and HREW on your exo.

In my experience, under a hard hit, DOM will crack, HREW will deform. I would use DOM for the bottom and outside edges and HREW for everything else.

Hey dj, sorry for the late reply. No, I have not purchased tube yet. I just found out I will probbably leaving town for work for the entire offroad season....boo....so I have been using my time to get the house ready for my departure. I may give loucan's a call soon though, I might try to squeeze out some cage work before I go. ANyhow, on another note. I notice, you own an excursion. I just picked up an 05 diesel limited over christmas break. Love it. Room for kids, dog, groceries, parents, jeep parts, and I can tow with it. I kind of want to lift the heck out of it too.

Yep I love the Excursion, no desire but to use it like it is though, I am too cheap to replacing suspension and steering parts every year lol.
