Rig will be an occasional DD (couple of times a month) and driven to/from all trails. Trying to decide if it's worth the extra money for a Detroit versus just putting in a full case spool. AMC 20 with 36's. I've already broken a Lock-rite (bad install by the PO is my guess), so lunch box's are out.

I daily drove a toyota mini-truck with a welded rear every day from Perth to Downtown Ottawa for a year. Went through rear tires quick and made lots of noise in the parking garage at work but worked fine ;)

If money is an object, save yourself the cost of the detroit.

If driving it a couple times a month then I would go with the spool, used the money saved to buy something else for the rig.

my 2 cents

Is there a time when money isn't an object?

How bad was the tire wear? I've read a number of threads where the spool in the rear made it a handful to drive as it would pull all over the road...any experience like that?

Not bad, I would say 33% worse. (Take that guess for what it is)

As for drive-ability, It was fine. Never noticed anything but that would be dependent on Wheel-base I imagine.

my old sami was welded rear, and current one is spool. They roll fine in a straight line, but there is a lot of tension in the steering and twist when cornering. MY current one is could, so it does funky things, my old one was leaf spring and 33's so it just squawked a lot. I didn't wear tires, mostly cuz i didn't drive it onroad that often, but it was noticeable when i did. The bigger tires certainly take some of the bite out from that, but chew faster..

if you are going to be doing a lot of in town driving in your occasional trips, you will prob find the locker is better, if it is more rolling on the highway with a few turns, just spool it.

I am running a spool front and back, and I drive it on the highway a couple of times a month, (never in the winter) but in tight spaces like parking lots, ect it does chirp in the rear on pavement. I love the spools off rd. full traction to all wheels all the time. and no locking and banging and racheting,

I'm spooled in the rear and besides some tire scrubbing when doing corners i've noticed no ill effects on the street - but it will wear those tires quick. My .02
