For sure you want to be legitimately insured, if you don't disclose your mods and you cause an accident the insurance company may consider it fraud and from then on you'll have a hard time insuring anything.

That would be Palladium Insurance, they're a broker and insure my Jeep with The Dominion. The owner Tim Snelling owns and off-roads a Land Rover and he convinced the people at The Dominion that we're not high risk. The only catch is they'll want your home insurance too. Insuring my Jeep wasn't any more expensive but the house was, but still better than no insurance or Facility insurance which I was on for 9 months.

When I lifted my jeep with 33's, I called my insurance company and told them what I had done. All they were concerned about was if I had made it 'faster'. I laughed and said it was actually slower. When asked if I wanted to increase the coverage due to the mods, I said no, and my insurance stayed the same. YMMV

iam currently with belair direct. they are the cheapest which is why iam with them. and i only have basic liability. and i was told that if i have any offroad mods, ie. tires lift etc. that they cant insure me. and i have called afew other place and they seem to be saying the same thing. and any place that will do it is super expensive. now iam also only 22 years old. but i have a good driving history and no accidents. just want a fair rate and to be legal

Well there is yer problem right there... You are 22 years old and until you turn 25 they will say you are a high risk driver.
As for saying they will not insure your vehicle you remind them that this is Ontario and it is illegal to deny insurance on any vehicle or home no matter what the risk.
Unfortunately they will give you an extremely high quote...
And BelAire sux ass in alot of cases... I have heard that YES they will give you a super low rate (or best they can do) but when it comes time to settle a claim if you have an accident, that it will be very difficult to get anything out of them.
Now as I said... You are 22 years old and considered a "High Risk Driver" due to your age...
Keep calling brokers and insurance companies... No one said you could not shop around and when you find a much better (reasonable) rate don't be afraid to cancel with the company that insures you now for the best rate you can find.
Try dealing with the bank you are with... If you have had the account with them for a long timethey may give you a better deal. Don't quote me on this but it is worth a shot...
Also... The less questions they ask when you call for a quote the less you have to answer to them.

i agree with you on the fact that belair has a rep for being hard to deal with in general. thats not my problem. i was actually denied insurance when they found out my jeep was lifted and modified. and i have gotten the same story from other places when i did try to shop around. that no one will provide coverage for a vehicle that is used for offroading. thats why my question is who are any of you guys with? cause im looking to switch and want to make a list of places to check out. and yes because of my age i will pay more. thats the way it is. but when i get quotes of $600 a month, then ill walk lol

At your age... No matter what vehicle you insure it's gonna be expensive... You are in the High Risk category and nothing can change that unless you are married with kids or you turn 25 tomorrow.
You may not be able to get around that.
And as I said before... It is ILLEGAL in Ontario to deny anyone insurance... Your going to have to bite the bullet and pay up...
Or... ask your parents to add your vehicle to there policy if they will...
These are the best answers I can add here... The rest of the answers depends on the insurance company you will end up dealing with.

Hey Scott. You know both my Prelude and Blazer. Both are 100% covered by easyway insurance brokers. I had an appraisal done on them to get the proper insurance. I think it was AAS that did the appraisal. Ill talk more to you about it tomorrow when I stop in for my parts.

I'm with Dominion, also. They asked for pics of the truck after any mods, and that's about it. With the exception of engine swaps. They also insure it for off-road use.

my broker told me not to worry about it unless i make the thing go faster. When I asked if I could have that in writing or in an email or something for my records they refused and said there is no way anyone would ever admit to that officially like that.

My friend got burned like that and ended up fighting for money for 4-5 months before they finally paid him out.

Now, what happens when you wipe out a bus full of nuns and they really want to dig themselves in and fight you in court over something and you have nothing official saying you have mods you are screwed.

ya i think your right. they cant deny you liability. but the idea that if i have an accident and i lose my truck still doesnt make me feel to good about my insurance. im going to get a list of companies and brokers together and start calling around. if i find any useful info ill post it up here. thanks for the input

cheers

I was talking to the Ins. Broker last week about liability insurance for my buggy... Home built blah blah blah...
She said she is gonna dig deep and see what can be found out for strictly off-road insurance similar to a quad/dirty bike/side by side...
When I get more info I will share that as well...

You guys are using the wrong terminology for the insurance company’s. "Off Road" to insurance company’s means not road legal.

I would say things like "stronger suspension", larger wheels, tires for mud and snow. etc... it's all in the wording. Let them examine the truck if they want to.

Good luck! :)

Kelly,

I did this for my Jeep. It is plated offroad only. All I had to do is get an apprasial, jeep is then covered for price of appraisal. My rig appraised at 12000 is 800 bucks a year. This includes 1M liablility, which is actually valid doing what we do. I hurt myself wheeling, I am fully covered. Rig catches on fire and burns to teh ground, I get 12000. 800 is expensive but for full coverage that actually applies I think it is worth it.

The whole reason to get the proper insurance...

Till Valhalla!
it gets registered as a "dune buggy" and ATV plates are put on it which means it is no longer legal for the road.
