I'm hoping to get the Waggy axles under the CJ this spring, and am having a bit of a dilemma on what to do. I've got to install new gears, and I also have a Grizzly locker and 2 open carriers. The rear is a stock Waggy 44, stock shafts. Front will have Yukon shafts with Spicer u-joints. Do I install the locker up front and weld the rear, or put the Grizzly in the rear and pick up a Lock-Rite/Aussie/Spartan/etc for the front down the road?

CJ7, 350 SBC, 350 auto, 4.88 gears, 36" TSLs...

why not a grizzly in the front, welded rear and save for real locker in the rear?

I'm not comfortable with doing the gears myself, and I'd rather not pay twice for the setup/install mainly.

Depends on how much your driving it on the street. If only to the trails, locker in the front, weld the rear. If it is seeing a lot of pavement then grizzly in the front and selectable locker in the rear.

I agree... If this is to be driven on the street I would not suggest welding up the rear diff...
I had a Lock Rite in the back of my Sidekick and got off the 427 north bound to go west on Hwy 7... Tapped the throttle a bit to hard on the corner and found myself spun around and facing traffic in the other lane... Scary thought for a street driven vehicle.
Think about a Selectable locker for the back end if you plan on moving the kids and what not... Shit does happen at the wrong place and time.
Also the cops don't like to here the tires squeel due to cornering when fully locked... Some fine for Unessicary noise or crap like that depending on how the cop looks at the "grey area" of the laws and can even try to get you for street racing if they decide.

Ran a spooled rear in a V8 ranger for years, daily driven to work.
Never an issue.
Was kinda fun putting it sideways downshifting. :)
Sure miss that truck.

Sorry, thought I mentioned that in the first post - the CJ will be driven to and from the trails, and the occasional trip to work/around town. Not a DD, probably more a 1-2 times a month vehicle.

John, are you running stock shafts in the rear of Mudlite, or chromos? In taking a quick look through Yukon/Superior/10Factory's websites, I couldn't find a listing for the Waggy rear shafts.

Weld the rear and throw the locker in the front :)

Personally for the cheap route with manual locking hubs up front. I would weld/spool the front and aussie the rear. I hear nothing but good about the aussie. And with the hubs unlocked the vehicle will retain awesome street driving characteristics. Also if you needed 4wd on the road. (ie: winter) you could just turn one hub in the front, to act like an open diff. A little wear I guess on the one side, but as long as you drive with your wallet connected to the gas pedal I cant see it being a huge deal. Also, with an aussie rear would you need 4wd on the street? my guess is mostly no. I seen a guy up here in pet with a spool front and manual hubs and he loved it. Daily Driven YJ, worked awesome. My two cents. I will probably go that route with my jeep this year. Cheap way to lock the front, and best of both worlds: Off road champ, plus great streetability. If you got to turn the hubs anyhow, its no big deal.

Or personal pref for the locker, aussie, spartan, grizzly, zip, arb ox whatever you prefer....
