jeep TJ tranny's auto vs. stick

hey guys. im in the market to upgrade from my little 2.5 YJ. to a 4L TJ. ive been looking at afew, and am not new to TJ's, but i do have a question. i have found one that is automatic tranny and am just curious if any of you guys have run the auto's on the trail? do they hold up, or is there anything i should look out for with the automatics? i think id like to get an automatic, just for ease of driving, but dont want to get into any problems so i want input! thanks

I have have an 04 LJ auto/4L, I have had no problems with it so far and have 250km on it. The only thing that you have to watch out for is the air tube on the top of the housing somewhere near the front of the tranny for water crossings.

The problem I found with my own shopping for a TJ is that they are only a 3pd auto up to 2003 - making MPG a pile worse than a std...

most offroad rigs are built with autos, just a better transmission for offroading IMHO, one less thing to worry about (working the clutch) and no stalling on obstacles...just my .02. If you can find one, the AW 4 that was behind the 4L in cherokees is a good and stout auto tranny but may be a bit long for TJ applications

With the three speed I'd be inclined to gear for highway cruise with the 1:1 third and put a 4:1 transfer case right away... It would still be more thirsty and the first gear in the Jeep three speeds is nothing to write home about but at least you would have the automatic.
