YJ Questions

Hi everyone,
Just starting a YJ project with my sons and I had a couple of questions(new to the world of Jeeps). I have a lead on a set of fsj dana 44's and I know they are pass. side drop which is no big deal cause I need to get a t-case anyhow. My question is since the rear 44 is offset as well as the front is there a specific t-case that I will have to go with? I know most cases are center rear output so will this cause major driveline problems? Would it be easier if I looked for a...

The offset probably isn't enough to matter if it is not a daily driver. I have a set of Waggy 44's like that for sale as well $250.

It will probably see more street time then trail time. My oldest is almost old enough for his licence and the plan was for him to help build it and then he could use it to get back and forth to school. I was looking at the waggy's to build a stronger platform that if we do decide to go a little more extreme we can.

The offset t-case/rear diff isn't a huge problem - tons of guys do the opposite with a Samurai t-case and centered rear Toy axle without problems on the street. What are you planning for the rest of the drivetrain?

I know my 8.8 is off centered as well and with my slip Yoke Eliminator hasn't had an issue

Didn't even think of that - my first thought was HP30 and 8.8 like you did to make things simple and strong enough for up to 35's. Lately I've been more and more of the mindset of "if you think you need D44's, you should probably just get 60's and call it good".

Lots of ideas going as to the rest of the driveline. 1)-Leave a 4l with ax15 and dana 300. 2)- 1.9l tdi with ax15. 3)- om617 with ax15. Also considered a w56 transmission with the 1.9. Thinking 33's for tires. Like I said lots of ideas floating around, any suggestions would be appreciated. I am leaning towards the 1.9, I think it would be an interesting build and also something different.

With a limit of 33s on tire size I would go with the 44 if you can find one. When I was looking for an axle I couldn't find one (didn't realize that Dwayne had his at the time). Dana 60 would be overkill for 33s and would probably be worse than an 8.8 for pumpkin size. My plan is to go to 35s next time I need new tires.

And I'm pretty sure I remember you saying "no bigger than 33's" a few years back. With the engine and gearing choices, 44's should be plenty strong. I'd even consider a set of Toy axles as based on the forum name, you may be a little more familiar with them, although I think they may be a bit narrow for a YJ.

That was because I was driving it to work everyday and didn't want to break the Dana 35.
Spacers should deal with the width issues right?

I do know toyota better and yeah they are a little too narrow. I could use spacers but I have never felt comfortable using them. dwcjwerfner what gear ratio are your 44's? Am I crazy or did I see on the old cherokee suspensions the front is spring under and the rear is spring over?

Presuming they are from the XJ, 4.88's front and rear with a Detroit in one end and a Grizzly in the other (I think). Pass drop, HP (re-tubed), disc brakes in the rear. Both ends are set up for links currently although I think the leaf spring mounts might still be there in the rear. The price should probably read $2500 for that set, if there is another set he has for sale, I'm unaware.

All the build details are in his thread, although it's a long read:

Sale ad on the axles:

I've been tempted to grab the rear to swap in my CJ for disc brakes and throw the locker I have in the front, but I'm not sure how long D44's will hold up to 300+ HP.

I also have a set of stock Wagoneer axles too. 3.55's, possibly 4.10's available. Need brakes. Needs bearings, steering and ball joints looked at, unsure of condition. Those are the $250 ones, thanks for the bump though Kevin. And yes if he is considering swapping sides my built ones would great on in an YJ. I am open to offers on them.
