1 peice amc 20 axle

k i need 2 - 1 peice amc 20 axles. im not sure if its a wide track or narrow track. its an 85 cj7 so i thought that it would be the wide track but i say this list http://www.jeeptech.com/axle/amc20.html . and i have a big N on my diff and that means its the Narrow Track AMC 20 3.54 Trac-Lok. so if someone could help me out that would be great.

I agree that something sounds off.

The easiest way to confirm what axle you have is to take the wheels off and measure the wheel mount surface to wheel mount surface distance (WMS-2-WMS). See the table at the bottom of the web page you referenced. According to that page a narrow axle should be ~50.5" WMS to WMS and a wide axle should be ~54.5" WMS to WMS. Don't stress if you don't get exactly the numbers in the table; most of these numbers are fudged to the nearest half inch with one guy measuring using a sloppy old tape measure.

If it turns out to be a narrow axle then someone must have broken the axles and swapped in a complete narrow axle housing some time in the last ~25 years. It might be worth comparing the front axle for width also. There is no big deal in having mismatched narrow to wide axles; arguably it could be a good thing if the front axle is wide and the rear axle is narrow. This would depend on how the Jeep is used (pavement pounding versus trail bitch) and how the suspension is set up.

kool thanks dude.. if you know anyone with one you should point me in the right direction.. BTW its for the rear. i prolly should have said that earlier but i forgot.

You mean the one piece shafts? They only come up for sale rarely. You may have to buy retail. IIRC they aren't that expensive for what they are... something like $300.

Watch the parts for sale forum at jeepkings.ca. You may see shafts come up for sale there but it may take a while.

Probably less than $300...I just picked up a complete front shaft set for a D44 at $300US retail, rear set would have been just under $200. But make sure you measure first before ordering.

Already replied to your other post, but here goes. I actually have a pair of widetrack axles that I'm not using and would gladly sell to you. I know you just want the rear, but seeing as you're running narrow right now, might as well do a complete swap and get more stability and a stronger set up. I'm running narrow right now, but I scored a D30/D44 combo from an 86' CJ earlier that I plan on swapping when money falls from the tree in my yard.
So the axles I have already loose and ready are the d/30 front w/new ball joints, 3.54 gearing, as far as I know it's good to swap in as is. The rear is the AMC20 with Moser 1 piece conversion already done, the only issue is the gears need to be changed, as of right now it's 2.56. Potentially you could take the gears from your amc20 narrow. You'd be gaining roughly 4" width in the front and 5" in the rear over your narrow track.
